Chevette Carb
« on: July 10, 2009, 10:13:09 AM »
Hey guys,

I have a beater Sammy that currently has a Mid '80s Canadian (not Electronic) Chevette carb adapted to the Sammy intake. This setup work great and improves power and side hill performance. I intend to convert to a FI 1.6 Tracker engine but for now I'm sticking with the carb until I finish my harness for the FI.

Now I am not a carb guy most of my experience is with FI. The float in the Chevette carb broke so I took it apart and got a new float. My problem is... I have no idea hot to set the float up! Should I just bend the tab so it matches the one that cam out? I cannot find anything on the internet except something about using a drill bit to set the level????

Anyone have any idea of how to do this?

Johnny

The carb kits I've used always had a little measuring stick to help you set the float bowl properly. If the kit doesn't come with it - and the old carb seemed to work well - I'd set the tab the same and see what happens. Not sure how useful this will be, but I found this on a google search: http://www.chevettes.com/forum/

Not sure why more people don't adapt junk yard carbs like this - WAY cheaper than the Holley, and less problematic.

Hey thanks... I tried that forum and didn't get anywhere. I think I'll try setting it up the way the old one was like you suggested.

Yeah this carb setup works great and from what i understand you can drill and tap it to use Holley jets. Then there is unlimited tuning. This whole Chevette setup cost less than $100 with a used carb.

Thanks again!

Sounds like you found a cheap fix for our not so great carbs. What was needed to adapt it to the Sammi intake? Share some pics, this could be something I might want to do myself!

In the end I went with Jeremiah's suggestion... I found a drill bit that fit under the tab of the old float and set the new one that way... it works good.

 Rago,

I should have taken some pics of the adapter when I had it off but I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested. I'll get some pics of the carb itself today. I'm using a mid 80's Canadian Chevette carb. The US ones are a electronic feedback style and you cannot adjust the fuel mixture. I'm using a small piece if 1/8" thick aluminum  drilled to accept the suzuki manifold and the Vette carb. The 2 engine side bolts line up.
The outside holes for the Suzuki manifold need to recessed on the adapter and the outside Chevette holes tapped for the Suzuki carb bolts. The center of the adapter needs to cut to fit the manifold single plane style. ( I did not massage the Suzuki manifold but you could. Then the carb side of the adapter needs to be opened up with a file to mate to the carb. Then your good to go.
All that babble that probably doesn't make sense... damn shoulda taken a pic.

Any way the carb works great there is a noticeable increase in power and it even works great in cold weather and on inclines when wheeling. I'm not positive on this but I think the old Pinto carbs are the same kind as well. I'll post some pics later on!

Thanks for the help guys!

Pretty much any carb is an upgrade from the Samurai carb. The Sami carb is really "smart", but it makes it difficult to work on, and the CFM is uber restrictive.
