Tested my OME struts today
« on: July 31, 2005, 08:10:23 PM »
Got a chance today to test out my new OME struts on the Goblin as well as the 2" Calmini rear coils I added. Let me just confirm what I've read several times before from others: the OME struts ride AWESOME!!!!! The place where they shined the most was on the really bumpy, rocky trails that pitch sammys around like playtoys. With the new struts, the roughest rocky stretch felt like a much smoother trail! I love them!

I did manage to eject one of the camber wedges I had installed to correct the camber, but when I just went to pull the wheel and fix it again, I found the bolts had worked loose a little. So they got lock-tited and torqued down again. I plan on checking the other side next to be sure it didn't come loose as well.

On the 2" rear coils, the back end rides smoother than it did on stock with 1-1/2" spacers. They seem able to soak up the bumps a little better. They are definately more supple than stock. The flex seems increased as well. I don't pick up a tire in the air as often as I used to. I'm also running 1-1/2" longer shocks in the rear...

Overall I'm very happy with the Goblin's new suspension setup. It was already one of the smoothest riding rigs around, so I was very happy that it got even smoother...

BTW, I got the struts direct from ARB using the gift certificate I won at Gonzukin, and the coils I bought from Kerry Wittig used. Both arrived very quickly and were easy to install. The only issue I have with the struts is they are smaller diameter than stock and didn't come with new dust boots. The stock dust boots don't come close to sealing against the top of the strut body. They're not even close enough to cinch them down with a zip tie... With the OME struts mounted just like stock with stock upper mount location(not flipped), they work great with the 1-1/2" coil spacers up front.

Yes,The OME struts are really nice to have ;D
Made a big differance in my ride, plus undoing the sway bar helped out a lot too.

Cool. sounds awfully great. Did you compare the struts, stock vs. OME, side by side before installing? Length of body, extended length, etc. Are they also bright yellow?

My stock struts will collapse to near the body size, just like a shock. This means that my struts operate at 90-95% of the overall extended length.

The extended length was just over 1-1/2" longer than stock while the body seemed just about the same as stock. Most of the extra length seemed to be shaft. And yes, they ARE bright yellow!

In stock form the compression is usually limited by the bump stops, on an earlier Track/Kick only around 65% of the travel is used.

god i would love to try a whole OME suspension on my 4 door.  spendy for the amount of lift.

So OME coils are better ride quality that stock right(i know Digger dosn't have them, just a general question)

I compared stock vs. OME when i did mine a few weeks back...  The body of the OME is about 1" to 1.25" longer than the stock, and the shaft is nearly 2" longer than stock.

You're right about the stock boot, but still a great idea to put it on there, with the washer as it should be in the top of the boot.  I recommend (as you've already done) to keep the upper strut mount in it's original position.   You'll wanna restrict the down travel so you don't over flex the CV joint.  It's nice to know you can use the steering completely from left to right at full down travel with these without having to be very concerned with CV angles.

Stu

i've got the complete OME setup in my lwb and it does ride better than stock. now that i've got no swaybars, 32's, and an exo its definetly a bit floaty, but was a noticable improvement over stock. ;)

hopefully with the sas it'll still handle and ride half decent :-\

I put a ome 2" hd lift(more like 4") in a 98 tj about six weeks ago, it was a pain to put in but worth it, what a difference,it came with four coils, four shocks, track bar relocator, new bump stops(yellow)and some spring spacers if the rig sits funny(ya right i'm gunna take the springs back out for a 1/4" spacer)had to call them no instructions and drilling holes was the worst of it but it all good now just waiting for the springs to settle b4 aligning(been six weeks still waiting for that)but this thing is baja ready now,LOL(had to try it out)it looks good with the mtr's on it now.(as good as a heep could)maybe he will wheel with me now or try to again!
