Which Springs??
« on: August 31, 2005, 06:02:59 AM »
Hi, I was wondering if you guys could give me some advice on leaf springs for my SJ413 (similar to the samurai).

I need to get some new leaf springs.  They must have 3" of lift but must also be soft enough to articulate for serious off-roading here in the UK.

I can get Calmini springs here and was wondering if I should go for their standard 3" lift or the heavy duty ones?

Will the standard 3" sag after use?
Will the heavy duty be too stiff?

Or are there any better/other spring options?

Lots of questions.......   ;D

Help please.  Thanks in advance.  :)

Have you thought about going to a wrangler spring setup?
Mean Green Wheeling Machine
88 Samurai 1" Shackles SPOA with 32" Tires
It's not a Jeep thing, it's not a Suzuki thing, or a Chevy,Ford thing.
It's a wheeling thing now get out and do it!

If you're going to stick with the standard spring configuration (ie not SPOA) then you won't want the heavy duty springs. I don't think there are too many options for +3" springs in the UK. SMJ (I have heard these are very hard) and Procomp (also hard) spring (excuse the pun) to mind, along with Ironman (no idea). I don't think OME are available in +3".

Cheers for that so far.

I'm gonna stick with the original spring set up and not go for SPOA or Wranglers.

I've heard that Ironman & Explorer are too stiff so will keep clear of them, cheers.

So I guess its gotta be the standard 3" Calmini's then?  UK is a trash place for really good stuff and by the time it's been shipped from USA plus the import tax , the price is out of this world.  I need to move over there.  Now that sounds like a plan  ;D

You should also try Rhino Ray, KAP Suzuki and Rubbers Suzuki too, they build SJs that are very capable so they will be able to advise you better.

If I remember right, cj springs from the front are close (2" wide springs maybe a little longer than your stock ones.)I have a buddy with the calmini lift springs, the first ones were the three leaf lift ones, they lasted until hitting the first rock, the h.d. ones he got from them to replace them were a five pack,so far so good, they ramp a little less than stock ones(I think his was 724 and mine were a 944 with rears up front and stock shocks)but they are ruff riding but could also be his shocks to be fare about it. I would get the h.d. ones you could always take a leaf off.
