4x4 no workie
« on: September 11, 2005, 11:52:47 AM »
Just picked up a 97 track/kick and although I THOUGHT the 4x4 worked when I test drove it I just got it on soft dirt and was able to get the rear wheels to spin easily but not the front wheels.  The front hubs are covered buy a cap held on by several hex bolts, so I doubt it has manual hubs.  The transfer case shifter seems to work fine and low range works well.  How can I tell if it is the auto hubs that are bad or the Tcase?  Would it be common for both auto locking hubs to be bad?  Its got 104K

it only take for 1 hub not to be working right to not work.

mark the front DS then drive in 4wd. It the mark is in the same place, it's a t-case problem. If the DS spins, the CV's are spinnin, then it is the hibs.

My friends Track had manual hubs and a spring worked itself loose, and would not engage the hubs. For the auto hubs.....???

Auto hubs say on the cover
"Auto locking hubs" or something
to that effect.

Junk the autos, they are weak and troublesome

if the low range works, your T-case is fine,
my best guess is the hubs are sticky, and I
never could figure out how to get those
dumb things apart, hit the wrecking yard
and get a used pair from a Track/Kick or a
Sammy, they interchange

Just be sure if you try fitting sammy hubs on there that they clear the circlip that holds the end of the cv shaft into the knuckle. On some track/kicks(my 93 included) there wasn't enough clearance and when I would tighten the sammy hub all the way down, it would pinch this circlip and cause the cv's to spin with the wheels regardless of whether the hubs were locked or not... A thick 1/8" gasket under the hub's body will fix this...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

Speaking of c-clips on the end of the CV shaft. How many are running with vs. how many without?

Hey, I know.... I'll do a poll...
