help, my sammy knocks when in gear
« on: March 15, 2005, 08:44:01 AM »
hey guy's I was wondering if anyone would know why my samurai would only knock in gear and when you are in neutral you can redline it with no knocks at all. I also have a leak at the front of the motor, I thought it was the oil pan gasket so I replaced it and it still leaks, would it be a front main seal? if so how hard is it to replace. thanks in advance.

What sort of knock ?

If you saying when you drive it and floor it and it knocks I'm thinking T/case mount, where as if you saying revving it on the spot and then it's an engine knock I'd be thinking big end bearings ??

If it only knocks when you take off or are moving, and you don't know for sure that it is an engine knock, check the u-joints on your intermediate drive shaft. I came very close to having a disaster because I didn't know to check those joints, and I had never heard any other vehicle make the same kind of noise.

The scary part for me was the fact that the first time I crawled under and tried to wiggle that shaft, there didn't seem to be any slop. A couple of weeks later when I checked it again out of desperation, there was mucho slop. When I went to replace the joints, I found the needles in two of the arms on each joint gone, (as in not there at all). I still don't understand why it didn't move the first time I checked it.

When you hold the shift key down and type 4X4 it comes out $X$. Could anything be more appropriate?

thanks for the input guy's. I took off my valve cover yesterday and found that a phillips head screw was just sitting on my rocker, so I put it back where it was supposed to go and then tightened down the other ones and I will be firing it up today and get back to you.
