steering?? rubbing
« on: November 22, 2005, 09:22:49 AM »
Hi, when i steer, at certain points, there is a rubbing/vibrating coming from somewhere in the steering.

It tends to be worse when its dry! i think the water might act as a type of lubricant!

Any ideas? is it going to be expenisive?

Cheers

Depends.

If your tires are rubbing on the frame, you need wheels with less backspacing, or wheel spacers.  The cost is about the same (about $50 per wheel), so there's no reason not to go with wheels with maybe 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 inches of backspacing (instead of 3-3/4 to 4").

If they're rubbing on the body, just get out the sawzall, and modify the body.

I know, that sounds real scary at first, but after you've gotten some rock rash, and had to hammer out dings with a sledge hammer a few times, the idea becomes a lot easier to swallow.

I had the same problem with my sammi and tracked the noise to the lower steering column so I drilled a small hole halfway down the column and sprayed some Motorcycle chain lube in th e hole and the noise went away. You could use just about any lube but I felt the chain lube would last a long time and Its been a year and the noise has'nt returned.
White lithium grease may work as well.
I'm sure there is some sort of bushing in the column that wears out but this works well as a temp. fix.

Good luck,Let us know if that works.
