Welding on the body/frame, quick question.
« on: December 04, 2005, 07:37:40 PM »
I was once told that welding on the frame/body, or any grounded part of a chassis, can negatively affect the ECM, battery, and/or Alternator.

I have been told to disconnect the battery, but never anything about the alternator and ECM.

Does anyone have any facts behind this?

I'm going to be welding some mounting points on my samurai tomorrow and don't want to fry anything.

I've welded on my mustangs and never hurt anything, but was always leary of it after I was told this.

Thanks in advance.

Definately disconnect the battery. If you do that it will be fine.

I smoked an alarm while welding I never had any problems  up until then, I now just disconnect the battery to be sure I don't have any more problems.

In my past life I was a bodyman :)  just disconnect thr battery ( both sides )

When you weld keep the ground close to area welding, the shortest route is the best route, it's just like lightening. If you ground the back bumper and weld the front bumper it's gotta go through everything else to ground, oh ya some of the newer vehicles hold a residual charge (airbag sensors etc..) so unplug and go for a coffee + or - 10min.

Ya I know big word " residual", I probably spelt it wrong ;D
