Mileage Issues
« on: January 13, 2006, 05:33:03 PM »
Trying to figure out a mileage issue. A while ago my friend put a new motor in his 87 Sammy. Stock tires, tranny, and T-case. The motor is a 1.6 8-valve bottom end, a 1.3 head w/ a phase one torquer cam. He is running a Weber 32/32 and a custom 1-3/4 exhaust. He gets 15 mpg at the best. The company that put it together for him told him he should be getting 23-25 mpg. If this is a true possibility, I can't figure out why he can't get better mileage.

Any ideas?

Bad gas, chemicals are now cheaper than gas so you will see alot of additives in gas from now on. ::)

I could buy that every once in a while. This is an ongoing several months kind of thing. My tired old 1.3 with a 32/36, leaky exhaust, and bleeding front main and 4:1 t-case still manages to get 17 (19 on a really good day with the wind pushing me  ;D ).

Just doesn't explain why my motor (the bad one) gets better mileage than his (the good one).  I have to replace mine very soon. I was thinking about a 16-valve or the same engine he has. I can't have that kind of mileage though. Not a be able to afford to get to and from work.

Wild,

That's were I thought the problem was to but, it seems to be right the only issue I can find is not being able to get the idle to drop down. Consistently. Could this be an issue with the water choke?

Yes, if you have a water heated choke
system, instead of electric, and actually
even if it is electric, if the choke is not
adjusted so the flap is all the way open
when the trucklet is warmed up, you are
going to burn lots more gas.

You don't notice this as bad at idle, not
much air is needed to idle, but get it out on
the road, open that throttle up and you start
to suck hard on the main jets, and eating a
bunch more gas than needed.

You need to get the trucklet all warmed up,
remove the air filter top, and look and see if
the choke flap is all the way open, you should
see none of the sides as you look in, only the
thin edge. If not you need to turn the spring
that gets warm and moves the choke flap until
it is all the way open.
