Kick CV's / half shafts - how strong R they?
« on: February 03, 2006, 10:44:22 AM »
Hi Team,

I am looking for feed back on the strength of stock Kick / Tracker / GV / Vitara / XL7 ( have I missed any? ) CV's and half shafts.
I would like information like tyre size , gearing , running a front locker , lift etc and what broke and maybe what you where doing when it broke.

Thanks in advance for any feedback ;D

I have 32x11.5 tires, 5.12 gears, WARN hubs w/hub fuses, and have broken 3 front diff housings(stock aluminum). I have never broken a cv joint, axle shaft, ring/pinion gear, not even a hub fuse! Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I was jumping the Tracker in 4x4, about 25-30 mph, should have been in 2 wheel I guess. Have since installed Anvil. I will see what breaks next!

Thanks AKOffroader.

A least someone cares :). I really thought this would be a good topic that would help ALL forum members understand a little more about "The weak link" on Kicks ???.

Oh well :'(

I don't think this is as big of a weak link
as has been reported, I've only broke a
CV Cage, the thing inside that holds all
of the bearings in place, went quietly, no
suffering, put another cage in it and all is fine

I had one break when the axle casing shattered and one more died after the boot split and it filled with mud. I waited for others to answer this because I think it may depend on the type of wheeling you do. If you get wedged up against a rock, the CV may break more readily than when you're mainly just churning through mud. If you're getting airbourne a lot that might not help either, you get the wheels spinning fast and then they hit the ground and pretty much just stop then there are a lot of stresses around. Especially if you still have some throttle applied  :o

Thanks Wild and Rhino - that is the spirit ;D

I am curious myself because if they are reasonably strong then why not fit Birfield cups and 4340 deep hardened axles to beef them up - assuming they really are "the weak link" of course - a fairly cheap upgrade that will fit stock rigs :).
Calmini has sorted the housing thing with the Anvil so not much left after fitting one of those :D

one of the things I don't  like about the anvil, is that you have to use their suspention kit, and the diff has to be lowered... I don't want either... but I want a stronger front housing..

One thing I have noticed, there is still a LOT of room in the aftermarket for Trackicks!!!  (juices flowing)

I am thinking seriously about an electric swaybar disconnect....  got it pretty much figured out..

i have broken a left side outer, and a right side outer CV on my vit. i am running the 26 spline shafts. i can also break the CVs at will if i want to, its not hard.

although, i am sitting about 3" over stock ride heigh on level ground, and i have about 4" of droop on the fronts. i have no front diff lowering (yet!), and so this is where the CVs are weakest, at full droop, and any slight turning or steering will see them spit metal balls and cages.

each time, the cage has exploded and the inner flower also broke into as many pieces as there are balls! so yeah, with a lowered front diff (2") and less droop or extension of the shaft will see them last quite a bit longer. in stock form, no lift, they arent really that weak IMO.

as for sway bar(s), well, there's only one, and i...ummm...well..it fell off one day, and i sorta lost it. i think it was the 2nd or 3rd day i bought my vit. a vit is 4" wider than a WT sammy, and with some 3"back spaced wheels, a hell of a lot more wider, so on road i'm not an F1 or NASCAR driver, i just enjoy the body roll, and the comfort of coils (compared to a sammy)

kick axles are weak when put to the test (37" ) tires , the only center up-grades is the anvil with a steel diff. x-cept the 7.5 mike diff.... the anvil is not exclusive to the cal-mini lift, it's only lowerd 1-1.5"that should work with the the 1.75 " front puck lifts great..  there is  better IFS stuff out there ( toy things ) - stan conversions.  i dont like to be to lippy but there are some who care!  there are up-grades ..... sas..... (upgrade??)  don't know . to each there own. me & mikes  junk's not bad!!  may-be i'm stupid with a 9" front & rear ?? don't  know?? but what i have is tuff!!     stan
