Tire selection
« on: January 27, 2006, 08:05:04 PM »
Hey guys, its been a while since i've been in the forums, so i figured i'd pick up where i left off with my millions of questions!  nah, just kidding....   but i do need to know some stuff.... i've come to the conclusion that the Super Swamper TSL's are by far the most popular tires for trackicks....  is this just because they're the cheapest you can get?  i was looking for other options and found a review for the super swamper SSR's, and it basically said the SSR's are better than the TSL's in every aspect... i know this is just one person's review and opinion, but he also said that he'd prefer the SSR over a bunch of other tires like BFG (which i have always thought was #1)... and FYI, this guy had these tires on his sami (if i'm not mistaken)...

anyway, i'm wanting to get some 31x10.5x15 or 11.5....  most of my driving is on-road, and i was wondering if i might be better off getting some kind of all-terrains so i'd feel safer on the road when its raining and stuff.... i probably do actual hard off-roading about once every two months, but i'm sure that will change with the new tires (i just don't have anyone to go with, and i'm afraid of getting stuck and having get myself out)...

ok, so back to my main questions why is TSL the major tire for zuks, AND, should i think about another kind of tire (if so, what kind)?

If I was doing a lot of mud or as a second set then the Swampers are pretty hard to beat but as a daily driver compromise then maybe just a decent MT mifght be a better way  to go. AT's are ok for a DD and dry trails but they suck in the mud.

On my sami I'm going to run the 32/12.50/15 TSL, I have had the SSR on my F250 and it is a good all-around tire for a DD-weekend wheeler.  I also have had the BFG MT on my Bronco, its a good street tire mild offroader but with my experience (Ga clay) it doesn't do some well, gets clogged up and hard to clean.

I have Interco TrXus MT's on my Ranger.  Great all around tire.  TSL type tread with radial mud construction and siping.  It goes offroad well and has frankly been the best truck tire I've had.  Wears great, great traction on and offroad, slick stuff doesn't bother it, and not a bad price.  I love mine.  If they made them smaller than 31's the Tracker and GV would be wearing them.

Remember a true Interco TSL is a bias ply which makes it not the most ideal for road use.

Whatever tire you get, have them siped if they aren't from the factory.  Siping makes a world of difference with mud tires and slippery conditions.  I do it to all of mine that need it and I won't run anything but muds now.

If you do mostly on road driving, the swampers will get annoying, and wear quickly. Get a BFG MT. Wear well, great road manners and do well off road.

Thanks guys, a lot of good info...  its still hard to determine what tire i need... havoc smirf brought up a good point, different terrains over different parts of the country..  plus, driving style, and a bunch of other stuff... i can't really ask here around town because doesn't the vehicle also make a difference?  like, my tracker and someone's full-size pickup will act different with the same set of tires, won't they?  full size is definately the dominant off-roader around here... that and yota pickups... but i guess that is closer to comparison of the tracker...i think i've decided to try out a set of BFG's....  i'm gonna check the price of them first, because i REALLY like the idea of the swamper's being 740 for a fullset already mounted on 15 inch wheels from 4wheelparts.com...   i could think about this 2 ways... "get what you pay for" or "experiment with the lowest price and upgrade as the need arrises"...  but ya know, wal-mart has a mud-terrain that i've seen a lot of around here... i wonder if they'd be any better and/or cheaper than the TSL?  it looks similar to the TSL, but the chevrons are smaller, and more tightly packed (the gaps in between them are smaller)

Never underestimate the value of the non-big name mud tires.

I'd take my TrXus over a BFG MT any day.  They're as good as if not better than the BFG MT's and are cheaper and come from the factory siped.  Best damn truck tires I've ever bought.

Tires will act differently under vehicles but only to a certain point.  A shitty tire is a shitty tire no matter what it's under.

I took my Maxxis Buckshot mudders out today..  I was impressed, you might want to check them out.. GREAT on the road, not loud at all.. and they really liked the trails..

They do like a lot of wheel speed to clean out though.. still, one of the better mud tires I have tried, that still have good on road manners..

hey i checked on the wallyworld tires i mentioned before, and they're called "HT Radials" or something like that...  upon closer inspection, i don't really know if they would be called mud tires or all-terrains....  most MTs that i have seen have 4 rows of lugs (which these do), but the size of the lugs and spacing is more like an AT..... oh, on a side note, i finally got a closeup view of BFG AT's, and they look awesome for an AT....  they were on a brand new dodge pickup that was owned by a pit foreman in Horse Creek strip pits here in alabama
