« on: February 24, 2006, 12:15:48 PM »
Hi , I need some help I got a bolt that broke off in the valve cover. I drilled a whole in the bolt and I was able to get a extractor in there but then that brok off in the bolt. the extractor was steel. Now I have to figure waht to do next? I don't want to take the head cover off and take it to a machine shop. Waht do I do?

what exactly does the bolt hold down? can you bolt it somewhere else? the problem is the easy-outs anr very hard and you will just burn drill bits up trying to get it out

I am presuming you still have threads holding in the broken bolt. You might have luck if you, very carefully, take a drift punch and tap the edge of the bolt thus, slowly turning the bolt out of the hole. I have had to do this on several occasions.  ;D

if enough sticks out,  you can put a nut over it and tack weld it there, then just turn it out.  a pic might help

sorry I don't have acces to my camera right now. the bolt is even with the mounting surface. So I dont think I would be ble to weld a nut to it. The extractor broke off in the bolt also and it's stainless steel. I've tryed it with a puch and drilling nothings working. The bolt holds down one corner of the camshaft cover. Theres 4 bolts holding it down. the one that broke is on the front left if you are looking at the the front of the car.
Thanks for the help guys

from the way you have described.........
the bad news is, your gonna have to take the valve cover off............
the good news is, after you take it off you might have enough of the bolt sticking up out of the head to get ahold of, mabie.
if not you gonna have to take it somewhere
good luck

From the description of its location, I will unfortunately have to agree. Best of luck.

take the valve cover off and get a nice pair of vise grips to get the stud out - work it back and forth also while trying to get it out.
