Reason I'm asking is because the '96 I'm going to look at this weekend has what the guy calls a whine coming from the rear end.  He thinks it's a bearing issue and has a bearing kit for the axle.  At the same time it's turning 31's with whatever gears came stock on a '96 2 door with the auto.

...however sitting in my back yard is my '90 POS money hole with 5.12's...and I'd be glad to get some money back from it if I could swap the whole damn axle in, get rid of the whine, and get proper gearing back.

Both are 2 door soft tops.  The '90 is a Japanese built 5 speed and the '96 is a Canadian built 3 speed auto.

My borderline psychic powers (along with stuff that I learned this week about TracKicks equipped with 3-speed automatics) tells me that the 3-speed automatic will be equipped with 4.625s.  You can jack up a wheel, mark the edge of the flange with chalk or a parts marker and spin the wheel to figure the ratio.

Of course, there may be antilock stuff that must be disabled or transplanted if so equipped.  I have an unknown year rear 4.625 third laying around that has an electrical plug on the case and a sensor ring bolted to the side of the ring gear.  So transplanting a non antilock axle into an antilock truck might make the project not worth doing...

Would a '96 definately have ABS or was it an option?  This sounds like a pretty simple, low option Tracker, not a LSI or optioned out one.

Basically I just want to know if there's a reason I can't just unbolt everything from the '96's axle and bolt the '90's axle back up in it's place (assuming ABS isn't an issue).

I'm sure it was an option... It was an option (that I don't have) in my 2002.

A 1996 Auto will have a 4.30 rear ratio. Other than that Ack is right and you can swap the 3rd member or complete axle assy out unless one has ABS and the other does not or just disable the ABS. I would recommend swapping out the 3rd member and if you need a 4.30, 4.62 or 5.12 with the ABS sensor there should not be a problem finding one.

I posted pics....the new ones are 93 the old one is the 90.

Yep, I bought the '96.  Little tall for my tastes but it's mine.

What size tires are those in that picture.  I wonder if 235's would look like that with that much lift.

Those were 30x9.5R15's.  Your average 235/75R15 would be less than half an inch shorter.
