Speedo cable replacement on a '96, how to?

Yeah, the new Tracker's so fast it goes 27mph sitting still...

I hear it's a bi%*h.   Anything special I need to do?  Got one one on order from the local Chevy dealership for about $45 and it should be here tomorrow.

No man, it isnt a big deal at all.  You do have to remove the radio and trace the old cable but, you should find it isnt too difficult.  Just be sure to not kink the cable during manuevering it through the dash.

Its decently easy so, dont fret it.    :)

Been there, done that.... more than once.  You did the right thing by getting the cable from the dealer.  The other parts stores sell a longer cable, what a PITA to get in without kinking!
kink = broken cable in just a few miles. :(

I just did mine tonight, it's definitley tight behind the gauges. I found it easiest to remove the four screws holding the plastic cover around the gauge cluster of the dash. That allows you to remove the plastic cover. Behind that are two more screws on either side of the gauge cluster holding it to the dash, once these are removed the gauge cluster itself can be moved forward. Then I removed the left front speaker. It allows you to shove your arm in the speaker hole to pull the old speedo cable out. Then just unscrew the other end from the transmission and pull the entire thing out. Pay attention to the routing to ensure you get it back in place.
 Feed the new cable through the firewall and route it back to the gauge cluster. Putting one arm into the front left speaker hole will help you to push the new one in. As well when you are shoving the gauge cluster back into the dash you can feel if the new speedo cable is becoming kinked and manipulate it to avoid any problems. Then just put everything back and obviously screw it back into the tranny.

I didn't have to replace mine but it was making a buzzing noise that was driving me crazy. The needle would jump around too. So I had to take it apart like how Jimiweld described. I shot some lube down the cable a few times then put it back together. I had to take out the speaker like Jimiweld said to get it back together. It was somewhat of a PITA or sould I say neck, arm, wrist. But now mine is fine. Have fun.  :-\

Thanks guys, I'm heading down to the local 'yard on Saturday morning to get the guage cluster.

Can it be removed with hand tools?  Anything special I should need?  Can it be removed with the steering column and wheel in place?

If you're just after the gauge cluster then all you really need is a phillips screwdriver. I'd bring a hammer, vice grips, sockets and a wrench set encase you see something else that catches your eye!

Okay, so I replaced the cluster and cable.  The cable and cluster both had this red, rusty/rubber dust stuff jammed up at the back of the cluster where they met.  Was kinda odd.  The needle on the speedo was actually screwed up, the spring that tensions it seems to have pushed the needle out from it's socket and lost it's tension.  Hence the stuck at 12mph.

Meanwhile the cable was rusty every where I cut it...which I had to do three times as it was NOT very flexible...at all.

Next I snapped the bolt off that holds the speedo gear assembly into the t-case...THEN I read in the FSM that I didn't have to do that and could just unscrew it at the cable.  DOH!  A self tapping screw saved my butt here.  A bit "redneck ingineered" but it works.

I routed the new cable a bit different but it follows the same general path and has less nooks and crannies and hard angles than the last routing did.

Oh, and either my t-case had someone put ATF in it at some point or my t-case and trans are swapping fluids...vundaful! :P  Eh, I was going to change them anyways.

Meanwhile I discovered someone had pulled the bulb from the Check Engine light...which is now steadily illuminated. :P

So, got the guage cluster back in and screwed down, the cable routed right, and installed to the t-case and took it for a spin.  The speedo works!...but it vibrates a bit at certain speeds and for just a little bit there was a noise...this normal?  Now it doesn't have the noise as far as I can tell and it only seems to vibrate at about 35-45 indicated (about 40-50 actual).  Sound fishy?
