Best performance best value I have found is a 2 1/4" exhaust with a high quality Turbo type muffler.....if you can afford it get a "Good" header that has ports that match the shape of the exhaust ports. (and a CAT if law requires in your area).
Split exhaust are for looks....doesn't do diddly for the performance...but if it's the look you want go for it.

Yeah a CAT is required.  I just dont want to jeopardize efficiency when I run duals.
Since running a 2.25 gets pretty good power (+back pressure) wouldnt that stand
to assume running dual 2"s would be alright as well
(or would power/back pressure be all screwed up)
And yeah, its pretty much for looks.  (which is why it would be split after the muffler)

muffler with two outlets
or
muffler with one outlet then split pipe

At what point are you looking at splitting for duals?

As long as it is a quality low restriction muffler I don't think that far back in the system it will make much difference....

I personally would not do it as it adds weight and un needed complexity....but hey I wouldn't be worrying about looks.

If you gotta have the look I don't think it will hurt if it is after the muffler.
