Tranny from Hawk ?
« on: August 01, 2006, 06:22:43 AM »
I called Hawk and spoke with William yesterday about a used tranny for my 97 tracker (3spd/auto/no OD).  He said $500.00 plus $90.00 to ship.

Is this price poor, fair, good, and can I trust the condition to be worth going this route.
What should I expect in condition for this price?

97 model years came with 4 speed trans,
make sure you are asking for the right one

If your trans has a drain plug on the bottom
it's a 4 speed, 3 speeds are a GM TH180 and
are different, my 89 has a 3 speed, made by
GM in France  :o

It's been a good trans, lots of miles and big tires
and a little more HP than a stock engine too

I have used Hawk to buy 3 different transmissions and a transfer case. Every one was in excellent condition and gave me years of dependable use.

If I remember correctly, Hawk goes through and does routine maintenance, checks/replaces needed bearings etc... to guarantee a good transmission.

Their price was comparable to junk yards in my area at the time. I purchased through Hawk due to the fact that I knew I was getting a good tranny from a company that supports my habits instead of whatever the local junkyard pulled out of a wreck with unknown miles.

I have never been disappointed with anything I purchased form Hawk.

I got a used t-case through them with the 4.24 gears and they had a great price and wonderful service.  I have also ordered other things through them and have never had a problem.  Always very nice, knowledgeable, and deliver stuff on-time.  I know that I will give Hawk's my business first before I go anywhere else.

I've had three different tranny mechs tell me three different things about what type of tranny I have.  One says a three spd, no OD; another says a 4 spd, and yet another says a three spd w/ OD and Lock out converter, what ever that is.  How can I be for sure?

Can I use the VIN # to determine what I have?  There is no indication at the shifter of OD and I can't tell the drain plug, sorry to say.

Thanks.
Frank

You have a 3 speed with OD, and the OD button is
hidden on the shifter, I think it's on the bottom side
of the T-handle, take a look.

If you are having a problem finding the drain plug,
get a friend with more knowlege on cars and stuff
have them take a look.

Yeah, that's what I'll do.  There is no button on the shifter and no plug.

I take it that the preffered tranny is the one with OD?  If it turns out that it's deffinately NOT an OD tranny, when I go to put another one back in can I easily put a 4spd back in?  Just a thought.

No, the 4 speed is computer controlled,
you would need to swap wiring harness
to do that swap.

Well, I guess I'll just stick to what I have then.  I had always wondered why our '93 4dr zuki got better mpg than the '97 2dr tracker.  I guess its in the tranny, OD vs. non-OD.

Which is better for off road...is there a big difference?

I like the auto for wheeling, 3 speed or
OD trans doesn't seem to make much
difference off road, on the highway you
get the better mileage.
