Calmini 5.14:1 t-case gear question
« on: January 29, 2005, 11:03:27 AM »
*** Edited to read 5.14:1 not 5.8:1  ***

My mistake,  I know it is a Calmini Rock Crawler set, I thought I knew the ratio's   W R O N G  :-[

Is it normal for a 5.14:1 sammy T-case to whine in 4th & 5th.  35mph - 50 mph?

Stright cut gears or somthing.

This Sammy is sick low geared.  Stock diffs on 31's

I want to throw on my 34's drive 3 hrs on the hwy at 60+ and then wheel all day and drive home.

But the gear whine is sorta scarry.

I would think that any low range running 30-40 MPH would whine. If your running that fast, why not high range? My 4:1 is quiet till 4-5th gear then the gear whine kicks in. I would bet in high range at the same RPM would whine too if you could hear it over the 80-90 mhp road noise.

30-50 mph in lowrange with 5.8:1's in the T-case and 31's  :o :-/ :(

This is in high range and the whine is very audiable over the roar of the 31" TSL's...    Just very concerned, Never had one whine in High range...

Anyone running the 5.8:1's on the Hwy?

I had these gears since they started making them. I don't think they make enough noise to show concern but they are noisier than stock. I drove from Jersey to Paragon,Pa a bunch of times and drove to West Varginia(10 hours oneway and wheeled a week) without failure to this day. Really if it just does it in 4th and 5th, I'd be more concerned with the transmission. If it whined in all the gears then I'd suspect T-case.
I'd check fluid levels and call Calmini if your still concerned.

I know it is a 2 year old or so Rock crawler kit with little time on it.   It is Geared so low, not driven much on the street anymore...

The complete kit is sold with input shaft, high output gear, new counter gear, counter shaft & bearings, thrust washers and gaskets.

So these parts should be new.

Nice to know that others are driving the kit with no issues.   Maybe i'll trailer it up this time, and then later replace all the T-case bearings as a measure of safety.

I checked the trans using my usual method,  Place the T-case in neutral and shift thru all 5 gears.  The trans was quieter then 90% of the other sammy's I've heard.    5th was just as quiet as 4th leading me to believe that the bearings have been done, as this is an abnormality.

I'll double chech the T-case keep an eye on T-case temps (Some how) and look for shiney oil.  I will also look to do the bearings soon just to give me a better feeling about the whole thing.

Down the road I might throw a stock T-case in just to verify that it is not something else...   I'd hate to damage those gears.

Every Calmini gearset I have heard is a bit noisy, the crawler gears in our old tracker were very noisy, but never had or heard of any problems with them.

I've ridden with one of our local Sammy guys with the RockCrawler I gear sets and it did whine in high range pretty badly.  I'd say that the faster we got the louder/higher it the noise level.  (primarily because the gears were spining faster).

Just brought the sammy home today.

It is a 5.8:1  and that makes for a L O W gearing with 31's.  P.O. says gear set is only about 7 months old and less then 500 miles.

I loaded it up on the trailer in 5th low just cause I could...   The low low on this thing is sick, in a good way.

Just gotta make a few adjustments before the run in two weeks.   I'll probally trailer it until I get comfortable.

We are gonna try to squeeze in a full day of trails at Shoe Creek in the George Washington National Forest  around  Crabtree falls at Montibello, VA.
