The "flea" breaths easier (flowmaster + K&N Install)
« on: September 15, 2006, 03:43:20 PM »
OK,  I wanted a little sound, and a little better flow for the DD....

Out with the old, and in with the new.

I wanted 2" in and out on a high flow Cat, plus 2" between the cat and the Flowmaster 60 series  (Import Street Performance Muffler) See photo for part#

SO, I had the muffler guy weld a bung for my downstream O2 sensor in the connector pipe.

It worked out well, and sounds damn good!  NOT loud, but throaty and nice, perfect for what I wanted. I really like the Delta Flow Import Performance Part# from Flowmaster. It's not a show exhaust, but should hold up well to light wheeling.

I put a K&N 2 3/4" inlet cone filter on too, and relocated the IAT sensor like AJMBLAZER did, into the base of the K&N.

Here are the shots

looks great man =-)

by chance do you have a ballpark of what this cost you? i really need an entire new exh and the calmini system seems to be a bit high hehe

also with the k&n on there do you still get alot of buzzing from the intake with no box on it?

Nice.  That's a nifty looking intake ya got there. 8)

Must be nice to have exhaust shops around you that can actually bend pipe without wrinkling it...or heck...just do something beyond installing premanufactured systems. :P

Mike71, I get some buzz from the intake but my Cherry Bomb is louder.  Even with the stock exhaust it was pretty quiet.

Mike, it doesn't buzz too badly.. I like it.

Calmini systems are cheap...  I paid around $450 for what I had done. It's the custom work and the Cat, and the Flowmaster that cost. without a cat, and a high dollar muffler, it would be much cheaper.

The custom work included cutting the old spring flange off the old Cat, and welding it to the new Cat (see photo) so the exhaust will still flex. AND welding the bung into the connector pipe. Custom bending the 2" pipe for the tail.

Parts include:

Flowmaster
High Flow Cat
Spring kit
Donut
O2 Bung
6 hangers
Pipe

It took about 3 hours for them to do.

He also painted all the welds with high temp, but I took the photos before he did that, so it still looks a little raw.

AJMB.........  yeah, I love my muffler shop.. they have 35 lifts!!!!! Biggest shop I have ever been in!!! They will do ANYTHING you ask, except leave off a CAT, unless it is obviously a race car, with NO chance of being street driven.

They will even weld up old rusty pipe to save you money when you need it... lol...

NICE.

Yeah, when I lived in SoCal I guess I got used to shops that would mandrel bend up a 3" exhaust for my Blazer and then charge me $300.  Then I moved back to Michigan and entered the exhaust dark ages again. ::)  When I lived by Grand Rapids I found ONE guy that would do it and it was a 2 hour drive and I had to leave my vehicle there for a few days.
Then I moved up north...

"mandrell...like the singer?"

"man-wha?"

"thayuts a waste...you dun need tha sorta bendin' unless ya gots uh beeg blok..."
 :P

"Sure we can do it...for $500."

So I got my Calmini exhaust, Cherry Bomb muffler, Magnaflow cat, and spent 2 days fighting with them...but got it done.

Yep, they overcharge up here... but at least they do nice work.

Parts came out to over $300... so the labor was just $150.. high? YEAH.. but hey, it's worth it to me, as I don't  have the tools to do it right, and I hate lying on my back claming crap together with ubolt clamps...

EDIT,   I was wrong, I looked at the reciept. It was just $71 in labor, close to $30 in taxes, and $347 for parts. I could have bought the parts for about $300 with tax, SO, they made a bit of profit on the parts...actually, it's quite reasonable.. I wouldn't have done the labor for $71... that's for sure.
