5.62's plus 4:1 TC gearing in an Automatic, Ideas for the 96
« on: September 20, 2006, 09:38:01 PM »
OK,  I have gotten tired of the 96 as a daily driver already.. too damned much wind noise, and no AC...   nope, I am over it.

I need to find a hardtop with AC as a DD.......

I think I will sell or scrap the Turtle, to build the Flea!

What size tires do you think I could get away with, using the 5.62's out of the Turtle?

I want to be able to keep it streetable.. doesn't have to be super practical, but I want it to cruise 65 fairly easily...

I am thinking 34x10.50 LTB's, on the 15x7 aluminum rims, or maybe my 15x8 rock crawlers.

I think with the 5.62's, and TC gears, it would be a beast off road... even with the 34's.

I KNOW I can trim and lift it enough with what I have on hand to fit the 34's... even if I had to......gasp......use a small body lift.... (nah, just more cutting!!!)

SO.. who has a Tintop to sell me, WITH AC!!

on a side note, the 16v with the exhaust and intake I have pulls the 28.5" 235's with ease, with 4.30 gears......... I am guessing the 5.62's will be awesome.

Anyone run 5.62's with an Automatic and big tires???

I can't wait, this sounds like fun!   I am REALLY going to try to budget an ARB for the rear, and get a twin stick or 2wd lo from Stan or RRO, with a TT front locker, that's about 1400 worth right there.. but that would make it nice and streetable... :D

My old lwb was a 16v 4spd auto with 5.12's stock. When I put the 33's on it struggled a bit but was driveable although the O/D didn't get a lot of work. When I went down to 31's it was definately better but still not great until I tweaked the engine a little then it went pretty much like it used to when it was stock. 5.62's would have been sweet to have and I think with the 34's it should be ok. I'm toying with the idea of some narrow SS swampers in a 9/34-16 for my current build. My swb with the 8v 5spd manual and 5.12's has been running  narrow 32's (7.50-16) with a Calmini 3" and no bodylift or bodywork and it wasn't too bad on the street but if I could have had more gearing and/or tweaked thge engine it would have been pretty reasonable. Oh and by the way I love my ARB's.

My 93 with the 5.62's and 31x11.50's on steel rockcrawlers does GREAT off road, but will barely run 60mph on the highway... due to the weight of the tires and wheels mostly, I suppose.

I am still not sure what route I am going to take.. all I know is that I want the 16v and the auto in my trail truck... and combining that with the 5.62's should be interesting.

Quad! Step away from the saw please.... just step away... there is nothing here for you to cut, just step away and no one gets hurt.

Really. I went back and looked at the pictures and that SideTrack is really nice. Are you sure you want to take the saw to it? If you must, just keep it clean. Just my .02.  ;D

Heh Heh...

I cut the BJEEZUS out of the Turtle... it's no worse for wear, and I wasn't even careful.

I think I can do it tastefully enough to make it look fine.

I just can't decide WHAT to do.

I don't need two Trail rigs that are so close to being the same.

Someone trade me a good Daily Driver for the Turtle...

Hi Quad,

4.3's ? - are you sure ???

To the best of my knowledge I thought only the V6 GV' manuals have 4.3 r&p's. I was under the impression the 3 spd auto's run 4.6's

I haven't actually checked by counting yet, but I was told that the 96, with 16v and 3spd auto had 4.30's..  I have been meaning to check to be sure..  BUT.. either way, it's either that or 4.62's...

I will post when I find out for sure.

They got some weird and wacky combos over there that we never saw after we had gone to the 16v 4spd auto in '94 for the swb.
