What is this noise from the rearend???
« on: October 03, 2006, 04:19:38 AM »
Hoping maybe someone can offer a suggestion. I have a 1990 2 door tracker. It was running great for the longest time until this morning. After going off roading on sunday, lots of mud and water some bumps and rocks but I took it slow and I do not recall hitting anything I'm getting a whine or hum in the drive train. It wasn't there last night on the way home from the day's off roading, after driving 60kms to work this morning I could hear it a bit, then on the off ramp on the way home it was getting louder.
The hum and vibration only occur after 35mph and up. It only happens when I accelerate it disappears when I let off on the gas. I think it is coming from the back of the transfer case or the rear diff. It makes the same noise in 4wd as 2wd.
I had another issue with the starter and that was weird too but it seems to be working now so I spent most of the evening on that. I did change both diff fluids and the transfer case. They all had a bit of water contamination (cloudy and grey ) but not too bad I don't think.
Does this sound like u-joints or do you think it may be more serious? I will put it up on jack stands tomorrow night and get it running to check it out, any input would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

Jim,
I would bet you have a U-Joint going out causing the whining in the drive line. The starter probably just had some mud and water in it.

Thanks zig, I'll try doing the universals tonight then. I posted another question about the starter, I would like to better understand what might be happening, hopefully you're right and it's just mud in there!
