Rough Ridin Samurai
« on: October 17, 2006, 06:58:33 PM »
alright, im not sure if its just me, but my samurai rides terrible. i have a go cart that rides better. ill list what i have. ive got a wrangler conversion in rear, and a RUF setup in front. im running rancho 5000's all the way around including a rancho dampener. Ive had a rear bad problem with front end tire wobble latley runnin only 31's. i got it professionally aligned and put the dampner on and it helped, but its not perfect. can still kind of feel it in the steering wheel. also, whenever i hit any sort of bump, i get flung all over the road, and it wont drive straight. no matter what, its all over the road, and when it gets bumpy or rough, it like litterally throws you all over the road. now i dont have the front sway bar on right now (not my fault), but it will be soon. other than the sway what do you guys think? from what i was told/have read it seems like my samurai should be riding better with the setup, but right now its for worse than stock. Its terrible and im not sure i even feel safe driving down the road with it the way it is. any input on this would help. (sorry about the long post)

Your ruff ride is from your shocks, take them off and drive it around the block real slow, you might find some red ryder shocks some place and put em in or get some doetsch 8000 pre runners shocks, your front end will mess with you if you have worn king pin bearings, lift shackles, worn spring bushings, wrong size bolts in them, tires out of balance, mud on them, and cheap steel wheels, the center will flex with heavy tires acting like out of balance, and check your wheel bearings and tie rod ends, that should keep ya busy, you don't need a sway bar.

Ok, You say its rideing terrible. You mean real harsh? It could be your shocks, but I doubt it. Rancho 5000's aren't that stiff, they are usually too soft. I've ran them for years on my SPOA before going to 9000's.  How are your rear springs up front set-up? did you take out the overload spring? Don't laugh, i've seen it done. The wranglers in the rear should be softer ride as well. Again, how are they set-up? how many leaves ect.

I'd say your alignment is out of wack. I know you had it to a shop, but the caster and or toe can't be right. What type of steering are you useing? Z-bar, over the top stuff?  Definetly check the wheel bearings, kingpin bearings, steering joints, ect. I've set many up like yours and haven't ever had any problems with the wobble.  I agree that theres no need for a sway bar.

ok, i am running over the top steering. all the bushings are brand new and ive got the right sized bolts. the alignment was done less than a week ago so i doubt its that. i also have ford shock towers in front for longer travel shocks. what i did notice is that the steering joints do have play in them, not 100% on what there supposed to be but i can move the whole tie rod up and down, no side to side play though, appreciate the feedback

I had the same thing with my 31" big-o mtr tires, i had to put the steering stabilizer from the axle to the tie rod, sound's funny but it worked well, also make sure the tire's are balanced, the little wobble i had left went away when i rotated my tire's then i noticed my rear end hopped it was an unbalanced tire causing most the problems, i eventually fixed everything by throwing away my sami axel's in change for toyota. And my 31" for 36' co-op grip spur's, no wobble now but some serious vibration from the rear diff being centered rather than off set  >:( Good luck with that, oh and you do not need the sway bar!!!!

Ok, one more question for you. Did this just problem just show up one day or is it after the mods were done? Anything that you did before this happened?

I don't mean to offend anyone, but a steering stabalizer, or damper is just there to lessen the bump steer or jarring from bumps in the road, not to correct any steering errors. There should be no ill effects to your driving if evrything is set to factory specs or correctly changed to match mods. With putting your rears up front you may have changed your caster a few degrees and without shims or redoing the mounts it won't be set right. This makes a HUGE difference on sammys with their short wheelbase and light weight. Did your alignment shop check the caster? Front to back tilt of the axle? Ask them for what they got for numbers if its not printed on your reciept. Sadly most shops only do toe adjustments and sometimes camber since they can adjust those easy. Post what you have for actual alignment numbers or go back and ask them to write them down for you if they didn't.

There shouldn't be any play in any steering joint, even my rod ends on my steering are a little loose these days, might be a possibility though.

And diffenitly check the tires for out of round cause they can balance fine on the machine, but bounce like crazy on the road.

just out of the alighnment shop doesn't mean anything unless youv'e been going for years and trust em.  the big-o in town here sucks.  the owner may be proffessional but  its 17 yrold kids doing the alignments.
i just like dents, i don't know why.
