Soft top Tracker and the high pressure car wash...bad idea?
« on: December 04, 2006, 08:18:26 PM »
So I REALLY try to keep my vehicles clean during the winter.  Road salt scares the bejeezus out of me.  I can wash my vehicles for free at a place I used to work (as in do it myself by hand) but I have to do it at inconvenient times during the weekends and I no longer live all that close to the place.  So lately the wife and I have been driving her GV through a high pressure, no touch car wash that has a good price and an underside spray feature.  The price isn't bad so I can't complain for once every other week or so.

Should I take the Tracker through one of these?  I'm hesitant with the soft top but am not sure if I am being too hesitant.  It doesn't leak during rainstorms or when I wash it...just wondering if that high pressure spray could be to much for the top. ???

I'd hate to find out the hard way right now with temps hovering around 20-25 degrees F.

Car wash is bad.
The way they dry the car off when it comes out is with a Mighty Wind.
Blowing well over 100mph(?) and could damage the top(or blow it off).
I've never took my soft top through a car wash.
i have used the self service wand pressure washer to clean the mud off of the under belly and big chucks of mud off the outside.

the car wash will haze up your plastic windows badly. But if they are already hazed, it works fine. My original top lasted 8 years, taking it to auto carwashes every month.

Thanks guys.  I think I'll just try and make the time to go across town and use the bay where I used to work.

A few of people around my town apply spray on bed liner to the inside of the fenders and various areas of the under carriage, they claim that salt and muck won't eat through it as fast as regular paint or even heavy undercarriage paint, reducing the need for car washes.

I've seen a few guys on here do the rockers and/or fenders in bed liner, I kinda wish I got to it before it got so cold out.

I took my old one through a few times, it's good fun. The last trip, water found a few pinholes, and my wife, son and I got a little wet  ;)    ;D
