Spare Tire Rack
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:18:58 PM »
Does anyone know if they make a swing out tire rack for the kick.  I have a 91 with a after market hard top.  I have to slowly open the hatch window and hatch door in order to clear the tire when I get in the back.

Thanks

ShrockWorks is working o one and will probley be worth the wait.
TrailTough, i think, is also working on one.
Calmini has one but it only fits the 2dr with a 3"inch bodylift.
and 600 bucks.
I have one of those.
perty good bumper, spendie and needs a little bit of fine tuning.

I have the same problem with my 'Kick.  I am going to make my own bumper with swing out tire carrier.  I suggest just making a spacer of sorts to move your tire out away from the carrier.  I've seen pics of one (on here somewhere) and it's pretty simple.  Yes, it puts more stress on the rear door, but if you aren't jumping it shouldn't be a factor.  Got any pics of your rig?

BTW, you're absolutely right about Freedom!

The best solution money-wise would be an mount extender.

Basically it is two plates with three holes in them that match the studs in the existing tire mount.  Put them together with a stout piece of box steel  that is the length needed to allow you to open the back window and clear the tire.

There is a vendor (Creations of Steel?  Steel Creations?) that made extenders so Samurai owners could mount bigger tires, but the mount moves the tire out and up - not exactly what you are looking for  - just outwards.

As someone pointed out above, it would add more stress to your tailgate - especially if you are using a larger tire.  However, it is less expensive than buying/building a new bumper for your Sidekick.

Hope this helps!
