So I broke my front hook....
« on: June 21, 2005, 01:26:16 AM »
Was wheeling in "the valley" and there was an old toyota pickup there stuck in a ditch. The guy left it there, I think he was wheeling alone. Anyways I put it in nuetral and tried to pull him out. I moved him quite a bit but it would go half way up the ditch and then back down, when it was going down I heard the hook break .. well it only broke at the weld.

My firend is a welder so I can get it rewelded or I can add something stronger, what are my options?

ummm, you dont know the owner of the pick up, right? and he wasnt there when you were?

ok, if you knew the owner, dont worry about me, but if you didnt know the owner, i dont think i woulda even touched the pick up.

and this is one of the major reasons why i'm putting in a new crossmember on the back of my vit. for solid recovery purposes.

You are 100% right. In my defense he was blocking our path though....

well i suppose if he was blocking your path that could be sort of a legit reason.

but knowing how we mod our little trucks, and their capabilities, i would tried to go around anyway possible. that, or unless you had other following you with less capable rigs?

anyway, its all good. i'm just never keen on touching anything left abandoned or isolated, and that includes pick ups that are bogged. thats all.

Question,,, is the hook you broke the little d-ring welded on the front like a zuk from the factory... If so you should not use that. IT is not a recovery point but a hold down for ship transportation to the states... If it is something you added ignore my reply  ;D

I once pulled out a Nissan MQ Patrol out of a landslide with my rear factory tow point.

We were giving out supplies & groceries to those affected by the landslides and the Patrol had a hard time going through all the mud of the first we came upon...

Have you see how big of a difference there is in the 'hoops' on a Kick/Tracker and the ones on a Sami? I've been yanking out vehicles with mine with no problems for years. It took sliding off a 4' ledge in Moab and landing directly on it just to bend the thing.

I've actually bent a stock chevy bolt on tow hook with a snatch strap hooked to my hoop that is welded to the frame :o

i had a real hard time trying to cut and grind the tow loop off the back of my vit. i think it would have held up pretty good the way it was welded to the chassis. the front one? well, thats another story.

once again, suzuki has planned it from the start, vitaras were made to pull other rigs out of trouble, hence the rear loop being pretty solid, and the front need not be as strong, as the vit should hardly get stuck. more like flat towing from the front only.

just like how vits have factory diff breathers, and sammys dont.  8)
