"cut and splice" body tubs HELP!!

???Okay, need some info.  I have got two tubs to put on a sami.  the first is 88.5, very good shape from front clip all the way back to behind the drivers seat, (the seam where the rear floorpan, and fenders are)  there is no rust, except around the battery box area.  The second tub is a "pre-88.5", the rear is in great shape, all the way up to the transfer case shifter area.  Seems it had a V6 in its former life, and someone hacked it up pretty good, all the way over to the steering column, and gas pedal.......BUT, floorboards, and rear fenders are VERY GOOD, and its the same color too!!.   I was wondering on the difficulty, and or feasability of cutting each in half, and welding them together to make one good tub.  Where would you cut? along a seam, support, or ?  How hard is it going to be to weld?  I have a mig w/gas hook-up, but no tanks.  I cant seem to find a body shop to do this, everyone is pretty much a "parts swaper".  Also, if I find a shop, should I take them the rolling chasis, or just the two tubs?   Anyone local to Memphis, or anywhere, that would want to or be capable of doing this?

The nice thing about the body on frame construction of the Sami is that almost all of the structural strength of the vehicle is in the frame.  You should be able to splice two tubs together without too much problem.  A guy over at IZOOK put two front tubs together on his truck (front body end on both ends).  Looked strange, but cool.  You might want to ask Billy-Bob at IZOOK how he did it.

You will want to minimize the visible splice joint.  This is best accomplished by putting the joint in the area under the front seat.  The biggest problem doing it this way is keeping the door openings lined up and the right size.  Cut each tub about an inch long to give some overlap.  The best jig to use to hold the parts together for the welding process is the frame itself.  Mount the front first and crimp the rear tub slightly so it slides into the front section.  Mount the two parts to the frame, and when you get everything lined up right (especially the door openings) weld the overlaping flanges together.     

Be sure to post pics, we want to see how it comes out.

Why not just cut the floor( or at least the parts of the floor you need) out of one and and weld it into the other? Might be a little more welding but you don't have to worry about matching two halves together. That is unless you wanna make a stretched Zuki.

i did that to my kick its not that hard to do just a lot of measuring.i cut across a seam on the floor, rockers& roof. put tabs on one side of tub so it would be easy to realign. then weld & check for fit  doors and such items. you should use a mig welder with gas because the metal is thin.  good luck.    stan
