WATER IN OIL
« on: May 18, 2007, 10:21:29 AM »
a friend of mine in michigan busted a timing belt last week on 89 sammi . he put a new one on yesterday . he said it ran great.  he was adding some anti-freeze and the level kept dropping.
he shut it off nd checked the oil and thats where the anti-freeze was going. could it be a head gasket?? everything was fine till he added anti-freeze.  of course I ask him if he added the anti-freeze in the right place.  he said yes.  would a head gasket go that easy??

I really hate to say this but it is probably a busted head.  When the timing belt breaks you no longer have rotations on you camshaft and the pistons can slap the valves, bending them or cracking the head. Have the head magnifluxed or pressure tested, any decent machine shop can do this for $30 to $80.

Don't shoot the messenger!

sounds like a head gaskit,, your motor in a non interfearince engine so the valves sholdn;t have hit the pistons, but in some weird case were it did ,when he takes the head off  he'll beable to tell...

unlikely the piston hit the valves cause it is non interferance also he started it and said it ran fine.  did he notice steam coming out the pipe.  sounds like he might have a cracked block or he has hooked up a line wrong which allows coolant to enter the oil

isn't the water pump the idler on the timing belt?  is it possible that the reason the timing belt broke was that the water pump was seized?

Overheating would cause the head gasket to go.

just trying to connect the dots between a water loss and a timing belt.  Odd that they would happen at the same time.
