Howdy. New Here
« on: May 17, 2007, 06:01:47 PM »
Hey guys Im new here Im gettin ready to get my old tracker back and I had a few questions if ya dont mind....It's a stock 96 tracker 5speed.

Some basic plans for it would be of cousre bigger tires, a better stereo, wheels, a good bumper, lighting, prolly an optima battery,a rear locker, and maybe an exhaust. just simple and functional is what im going for.I was thinking 31s but would I have clearance problems. Prolly go with a cherry bomb, and I know the entire sopund system needs to be replaced....(long story short, about two years ago, she was drove of a 9 foot bank at 40 mph into a 7 foot deep crick...lol)

1.What is the max size you can run with no lift?

2. Do they respond well to freeer flowing exhausts? I'm used to v-6s and 8s, and I know some 4 bangers will lose bottom end if you free up the exhaust. And do they sound alright? (I once made the mistake of throwing a cherry omb on my 4 cyl nissan pickup....ever hear 563 bumble bees buzzin around a coffee can?)

3. I know the center holes in the wheels are pretty big...Wil;l this give me problems finding aftermarket wheels? I just want some black steel 15s, like american racing 767s...

4.Locker.....Suggestions?

5.Front bumper...again, suggestions?

Any info would be nice

Thanks!

#1-  I've run 235s on 15x7 wheels, minor trim on bottom of front bumper

#2- Cherry Bomb? No.  A turbo or a Magna sounds good.

#3- Most after market wheels that are 5 on 5 1/2 have big enough centers.
You can always check with an extra center cap.

#4- I love my ARB. Spendie but worth it.

#5- Depends on what you want for a bumper.
Calmini has a good one.
Shrock works (I believe) has an Awesome one.
TrailTough makes a pre-runner style with winch mount.
95 2dr Geo Tracker with Calmini 6"inch combo lift, 32'inch BFGs M/Tlocked and loaded--D.D is my 06 Racy RED Aerio SX AWD

Welcome  and ditto on Hotrods suggestions. I broke the driver side front axle at the beginning of a  class 4 run and finished the trail with only my locked ARB in the rear. Take pics of your build and post up...we love pictures !!!

Lift it! get some 1.5" coil spacers, flip the strut mounts, get some Ford Crown Victoria rear Shocks, and run 30's or 31s on 3.75" BS 15" wheels. Do some fender work, get a new exhaust, turbo muffler does sound good, and with a  new cat and 2.25 pipes, it helps a lot. It's pretty cheap, it's easy, and it makes a pretty damn good off road machine.

I belive that 2.25" is the biggest your supposed to go with a 4cyl for its exhaust.
Backpressure= top end
Free flowing = bottom end
Deffinatly dont put a cherry bomb on it, it will be the ultimate buzz box.
Dynomax super turbos do sound pretty good on 4cyls, make them sound deeper.

I run a cherrybomb on my 97 4dr and it is the ultimate buzz box, but it was cheap!! I agree w/ phx96track, LIFT IT!! With just a 1.5" coil lift you can run 245/75's with alittle trimming. They look so cool and different w/ the lift. As far as lockers and everything else, I do not know. I can sell you coil spacers, 1.5" or 2". Look on ebay under seller: hoepkers.
1997 4dr. Sidekick Sport 1.8L DOHC
2" coil spacers- I make and sell 1.5" and 2" on e-bay.  Look under seller: hoepkers
3" Masterkit1 body lift
Custom strut spacers
31/11.50/16 Super Swamper LTB's w/1.5" wheel spacers Steel bumpers Custom cold air intake 2" exhaust w/cherry bomb 98 Expedition, 2" lift, 35's, Magnaflow exhaust - BIG BLUE

I forgot, I also have a set of 15"x7" steel rims. They are off an older Ford pickup but have the 5x5.5 pattern and the center hole is right. The back spacing is a little better than stock and they need painted or powder coated but would make good beaters.

Back pressure does absolutely nothing for performance in any internal combustion engine. Exhaust design is about expelling spent gasses as quickly as possible and using the refracting sound and pressure waves to create low pressure zones to help draw fresh mixture into the cylinder, also as quickly as possible.  "Back pressure" in any exhaust system is a sign of compromised exhaust design.
