97 tracker automatic question.
« on: June 19, 2007, 10:08:56 AM »
I was wondering why my three speed auto in my 97 tracker seems like it shifts 4 times. Does this have to do with the torque converter? Also, what is the correct way to set your kick back on an auto, it seems that I have to push the pedal too far down on a hill for it to kick down.

Thanks.

There should be a cable running from your throttle body down to the transmission. There is an adjustment spool for the cable on the throttle body that you can set. Don't go too far with it or it will cycle between 2nd and 3rd at low speed. If you don't know how long its been since the tranny was serviced, it might be a good idea to change oil and filter as well as this will affect performance. Good luck!

Its been about 8000 miles since I changed the fluid and filter in the tranny. Do the 3 speed normally runs 3500 rpms at 65-68 mph? It seems to shift into a 4th gear though, but it shifts into this gear really quickly out of 3rd. I wondered if this is the converter locking and I didn't know if this had anything to do with the kick-back settings.  I set the kick back by having someone give the vehicle full throttle and then I adjusted the kick-back cable so it would be tight with no slack at full throttle. Is that the correct way to do it?
Thanks for the info.

It should be the converter locking up,as mine does this sometimes as well.and that's what the zuki dealer told me.I run about the same rpm as well.
