22R in, Now my steering's horrible. Any ideas?
« on: July 01, 2007, 01:15:37 PM »
How's it goin guys?  I've just finished installing a 22R into my samurai, along with Jeep CJ7 leafs, longer shackles, and larger steering dampner.  I had an aluminum radiator built for this project and moved it forward as well.  In doing so though, I cut out the stock crossmember and replaced it with a new one made of C-Channel.

I've replaced all the bushings in the springs as well as the frame with brand new poly bushings and I've found myself left with a sloppy as all get out steering setup.  It neither pulls one way or another in particular, it's just sloppy and won't hold a straight line.  Once I get the rig up to about 40 it's almost impossible to keep it straight.  The steering's tight between the wheel and the steering box so I'm kinda left with no more ideas here.

If anyone has anything to offer that'd be great.  Thanks.

Longer shackles cause you axle to rotate(pinion moves up) a little, making negative or zero caster, depending on how long the shackle is.

The set that I built is only 1.5" longer eye-to-eye.  I'll throw on some shorter ones though and see if that makes any difference.

With everything that I read about the panhard bar that sounds like the ticket.  Problem is that when I went to build it tonight, with the oil pan of the 22R a bit lower, and the fact that I'm still spring under (and yeah, that is because I'd like it that way), the panhard bar would be going straight through my pan in order to keep parallel with my draglink.

Has anybody else run into this problem?
