New Member 95 Tracker
« on: July 04, 2007, 04:01:18 PM »
Hello all,
I just joined the group as I'm about to purchase a 95 Tracker. It's a
two door hard top, 4x4 automatic, and only has 60K miles. My neighbor
has owned it for a couple of years so I know it's been a great
vehicle during that time. I'm hoping someone can help me with a
couple of issues it has.

1). Tires. When my neighbor bought it, it had 235/75/15 BF Goodrich
Radial T/A tires on it that are now worn out. They're mounted on some
really nice aluminum wheels that I intend to keep using. I believe
the original tire size is supposed to be 205/75/15. I'd really like
to put a set of BF Goodrich All Terrain tires on it, but the smallest
size is 235/75/15 as well. Any suggestions on whether these might be
ok?

2). The check engine light is on and has been on for some time. The
owner thought he could get the code read, but the garage he visited
said they could only read 96 and newer. I know there must be a way to
read the codes on it by turning off/on the ignition or something.
Hopefully there can't be TOO much wrong with it as it runs great.

Overall, the little vehicle runs and drives excellent and I'm hoping
it will keep me out of car payments for several years.

Any suggestions from experts would be greatly appreciated. I can't
seem to find much on the web related to these kind of specific
questions but hopefully someone can help. Are there any service suggestions such as timing belt, etc. that you guys recommend that I perform straight away?

Thanks!
Todd Kirby

I run 235 BFG ATs on my stock 95 two door soft top but they do rub at full flex, sharp turns.  I don't even recall what the wheel size / offset is though.
As for the check engine light, it will come on for service reminder when the odometer hits particular miles.  60K may be one of them.  If thats the case, you should be able to turn the light off by flipping the check engine light switch.  It is usually located to the lower left of the steering column.  Remove the little panel below the steering column or the left front speaker if needed to find it.  Can be a pain to find.
If its a 16 valve, you can get the check engine light to flash stored trouble codes, by jumping pins on the diagnostic plug.  The plug is located in the engine compartment near the battery.  It is white with 6 pins and a rubber cap over it.  You need to jump pins #2 & #4, turn the ignition key to ON and the check engine light should flash the codes.  Code 12 is normal.

Hope this helps!

Great year and model! Been driving the same one for a couple of years now, love it. Get the Transmision serviced, torque converter lockup solinoid tends to go around 60 to 80k. Keep the valves adjusted, fresh fluids and filters, and you should get a lot of happy miles out of it. Also, that motor responds really well to a header, two inch exhaust, and k+n, or foam type filter. Really wakes 'em up.

Thanks for the info! I should be getting the tracker later today. First thing I'll do is see if I can find the reset for the CEL. Second thing it needs is tires! I live in West Central PA and need tires that give good grip in snow but I'm also paranoid about hydroplaning in rain. Anyone have specific recommendations? I was planning on 235 BFG ATs but I'm open to suggestions. I know several people personally who have had good service from Michelin LTX tires, but I'd like to go with a rather aggressive tread and I think the BFGs would look great and perform well. I really like the RWL look rather than just outlined white lettering.

I have been really happy with the Toyo AT tires.  Great traction in the snow and rain.

I got the Tracker home this evening and immediately pulled the left front speaker, found the switch, and reset the CEL. So far so good...if something is wrong I'm sure it will come on again in a few days.

One immediate issue I need to address is the rear door. It seems that the linkage has come loose inside the door. The interior panel on the rear door is just a piece of plastic held in with a bunch of pins of some type...how do I remove those safely without breaking them?

Overall, I'm very pleased with the vehicle. It's super clean, only has 60K miles, the 4x4 works great, and the little 16V engine runs awesome. For $2000 it's hard to beat. I'll post pictures as soon as I find a hosting site - looks like the site here doesn't allow attachments (or perhaps I haven't been a member long enough or something)?

Thanks for the tips thus far. I'm hoping to get some tires on it this weekend.

It's next to impossible to get those push pins out without breaking them, so go ahead and pop 'em out using some kind of flat tool, and get replacements at your local auto parts store.

Push the centre in, the clip should then come loose.

Well, a bit of an update. I'm still not daily driving the Tracker, though I'm close. I took it in for tires, alignment, and inspection. New tires turned out to be Bridgestone Duelers with a 60K warranty in 215/75/15. Alignment was out a bit but not horribly...the suspension and steering components are all in excellent shape, no problems. Failed inspection due to poor brake rotors though, and that's where things got a bit ugly. It had NEW pads, but the calipers were pretty badly rusted and the rotors were badly pitted. In removing the calipers, I pulled the brackets off the knuckle as they were also pretty rusty and one of the bolts broke off. Turns out NAPA sells new calipers and brackets ($45 each), however they only gave me 2 copper washers for the banjo fittings (needed 4 total) and cost me yet another day of not getting it on the road. HOPEFULLY, I'll get the brakes back together this evening, get the lines bled, and I'm ready to roll!
