new engine in....got some questions on a major problem
« on: July 28, 2007, 03:21:59 PM »
as soon as i hit the key on the new engine it started sputtering, and idleing on 3 cylinders, if i take the idle up to about 2 grand she smoothes right out, but as soon as i let off the throttle, it spits and sputters, and sometimes you can hear it backfiring thru the intake, i checked compression, all have 175 +.....except the middle cylinder, which has about 125.....i cant seem to figure out why?? could it be a stuck valve or...?? any help would be aweasome!.....by the way, this is a 95 geo tracker with a 3spd. auto trans and a 16 valve engine, i put a 98 motor in it from a junkyard......

check the timing to start with - did you put a new timing belt on it before innstalling it in your truck? i cant remember if the 16valves have adjustable valves - if so check that as well.

Check your timing and your valve adjustment as derekj said and then it may be a bad valve. One way to see if compression loss is due to a bad valve and not rings is to put a small amount of oil in the questionable cylinder and recheck your compression. The oil will seal the rings enough to boost compression if they are worn but if it is a bad valve the compression will still be low.

It could be a sticky valve from sitting,a damp or cracker dist. cap, a bad plug wire, a leaky injector, or timing, you could try draining the engine oil and adding about four quarts of atf in it and let it run for a while and then do an oil and filter change, that should help if it has been sitting a while, I have heard of cabs in newyork running it full time.

sorry about taking so long on the update, but the hayes manual avail. at murrays is wrong on the direction of rotation on the rotor, and i was placing the spark plug wires on clockwise, when the engins spins the dist. counter clockwise, so my 2-3 cyl. spark plug wires were swapped around according to the manual which is wrong.....but she's running great now, thanks for askin!

Really?  The haynes manual I have lists the correct rotation....CCW for 16Vs and CW for the 8V trakicks and samurais.

You still should have low compression on that one cylinder though.....misrouted spark plug wires will not cause low compression......like mentioned, it is probably either a stuck/hanging valve and/or rings.  But if it is running fine and MPG is ok, then I probably wouldn't mess with it either.

nope, the number 3 cyl. came back up ion compression, im guessing it was washed out from all the fuel running thru there unburnt, but they are all even compression now
