my 97's auto hubs died pretty quick within the first winter I had it.  swapped to manuals and never looked back

Been there, done that.
We broke 2 front housings and one pinion/ring set with our autos.  FINALLY corrected my cranial/rectal inversion problem and got manual hubs and we never broke anything up front again.

Luckly with the auto I don't shift too fast and it has yet to be an issue.  But I think I'll be switching the auto's out to my DD Now...
