convince me to buy this sammy
« on: November 25, 2004, 12:21:41 AM »
I just went for a test drive
it's a stock 1.3 87
mechanically the engine is wicked

however the guy has 31" tires on 15x10 rims w/ huge backspacing

the spoa conversion totaling a 6" lift w/ monroe shocks

right turn signal isn't working, assuming bulbs
it's really realy cold inside though the heater was on full
windshield wipers are not functional
the clutch is new, but wow it's like driving a truck and it's squaky... I think it just needs adjustments, I think the 2nd gear syncro is just dead, as it grinds at any speeds

oh and it can't even pass 40" mph at all, only can use 4th gear

however...
how much do you think it would cost to get that thing streetable?
i'm assuming I need to do the following
rebuild the transmission and fix the syncro's
adjust the clutch, should be relatively easy
ditto with wipers/lights
however... the gearing i'm not sure of
w/ 31" mtr's on a stock motor... it's slow as hell
will even the right r&p give me the 5th gear back and pull it up to at least 65ish?
03' 2.0L CAMI Tracker w/ 1.5" Front Spacers, 2" Rear Spacers, 1 & 1/4" poly-rubber rear spacer w/ hose clamps, Monroe Crown Vic interceptor rear shocks,1/4" bumpstop extenders, 1.5" strut Extenders, removal of sway bar and strut bar + plenty of cutting for 245/75/16 Goodyear MTRs

well i wouldnt want anyone to convince you but sammys are wonderfull machines. The love to make you work and make you pissed as hell but if you want to run a sammy problems will definately arise. as for this one i dont know the excat costbut you have to know sammies arent fast by any stretch of the imagination. 31's on the stock motor isnt bad it is just a gearing problem. i have 33's but the r&p and t case are geared well so if i would drive it on the street it could hit 65-70. i dont know how much work you want to put into it but it depends on what you want to do and what you want to invest. some people like to take a messed up rig and make it gleam but some people want a good base to work off of. Are you looking to make this thing crazy with coils and 37's and spooled and what not or do you just want 33's and a selectable locker so you can drive the street and then hit the trails? really in the end its up to you.
You can take the Sammy off the trail, but you cant take the trail out of the Sammy.
