Anyone wheeling with the stock SJ410 1.0L engine ?
« on: December 21, 2007, 01:23:33 PM »
I have a 83 SJ410 that I just picked up and I just love the thing. I have ordered some parts from HAWK and I am going to do a SPOA. I want to go with 31" BFG M/Ts. It still has the stock gearing which is 4.10 I think. I know it will be OK on the highway with the 31s but will the 1 liter have enough power off roading? I plan on puting in the 4.16 t-case gears for the better low range. But I am wondering if the engine will have enough jam to get enough wheel speed to get through mud holes. It is not to bad for power now with 235s so hope fully with the lower t-case gears it will suffice until I can swap in another powerplant. I just wondering if anyone else is still running the 1liter or if everyone has upgraded. I have a line on a 88 samurai with a locked up t-case for cheap, Should I tell the guy what is wrong or just buy it and replace the shifter sheet and laugh all the way home?

I've just got myself a SJ410 trayback but I won't be driving it till early next year as I will be pulling the cab off and doing a little work to it first. I've already lined up some Sammi widetrack diffs for it but then it'll have 3.7's instead of the original 4.11's so I've ordered a Trail Gear 6.5 for the t-case. I'm sticking with the 1.0 for awhile but I'll be swapping in the 1.3 ignition system and it has headers too. Eventually the plan is to try and get a K6A 660cc 3cyl turbo with a 4 spd auto for it from a Japanese market Jimny. They pretty much bolt in to 1L. I've got a set of 34" Swampers sitting there waiting for it  and I just picked up an ARB airlocker yesterday that I'm going to put in the front that came out of the back of a Sammi and it'll have an auto locker in the rear. Already got some vented lwb Kick brakes for the front and a Kick power steering system for it too. In the suspension area it will be staying SPUA but getting a chassis extension for a RUF with OME rear springs all around and new shock mounts with some OME N76 shocks to match. I've watched others wheel them and setup and geared right they do fine plus I like the look of the old style grille 8)

33x12.5 Pro Comp Xtreme Mud Terrains with a 6.5:1 Transfer case and 5.12 Gears.  Wheels great.  :)

Highway is actually more of a problem then wheeling.  And 1st gear is next to useless at crawling when in high.  In low range I usually run around in 2nd unless I need to crawl, but 3rd is a bit high for steep climbs and I usually have to down shift.

The Stock SJ-410 transfer case has a 10% reduction in high and low range over the stock SJ-413 (Samurai) transfer case.  So going with the 4.16 gears you won't actually see a reduction in high range.  And depending on your model you won't be able to use the lower gear set in your transfer case, you will need to go to one from a Samurai.  Nothing from your axles swap over to the SJ-413 other then your brakes, and your springs are 3" closer together (1.5" per side) then on a Sammy, so if you swap axles you need to re-weld all of your spring perches.

I love the fact that the SJ-410 is a bit different, but building up a Sammy would be easier.  Unless you plan on replacing everything anyway, then go nuts.  :P

I've got another t-case sorted so I can fit the gears and narrow track spring spacing on widetrack diffs is  8) Just trying to source some 1.3 narrow track spring plates. Eventually I'll be going 5.12's with the K6A.

83sj410 If you are going to stay with the 1L diffs but want to change the ratios for bigger rubber then the old LJ's will fit but the later 1.3 and kick stuff won't.
