Opened up my front hub and.........
« on: December 21, 2007, 03:16:33 PM »
it looked like this.........

The reason i took the hubs apart was because my car (95 Sidekick 4dr 16v) would not lock into 4wd. I believe that the spring on the inside actually broke into two pieces, now bear with me because i am not up to date with my terminology, Free/lock knob came off by itself on the drivers side hub and left the rest of the assembly in the hub, while the passengers side came out with a ring and a spring. Around the ring there seems to be some arms that grab onto the knob so that the ring can move in and out, the arms on the drivers side are bent a little. All of that seems to move a gear in and out to connect the axel to the wheel. Now my questions are, 1. can i get hub pieces instead of buying a new hub? 2. How do i put it all back together so that i am not in 4 wheel all the time which is how i set it up becasue that is the only sure way i knew i could get 4wd without hurting anything.

thanks,

Ben

go to suzukiinfo.com and click on the samurai section. Scroll down and you will see the asian hub link. Click on it. Gives you a good overview of how to dissasemble rebuild and assemble the hubs. You can buy the rebuild kits at the dealership or thru most of the suzuki vendors.

cut the cancer off before it spreads!

I have tried to clean some that looked lik that and they never really worked smoothly.  Grab some used one from someone else for cheap.

Thats just old grease mixed with water.
Tis ok and should be fine with a good cleaning... Hell I have seen worse and worked just fine. You may want to look at the o-rings and inner cv shaft seal and see if they are rotted away letting more than the usual amount of water in.
I have a pair in the parts box that are pitted from alot of time sitting in a field and cleaned them up and they engaged easily without issues.
AISIN hubs are pretty tough...

Go to Acks' FAQ and do a search for locking hub.  There, you wil find three articles on how to rebuild an Asin locking hub.

If your hubs are pretty chewed up and you need spare parts, the best thing to do is to search the salvage yards and pick-n-pulls for a set of locking hubs off another, less fortunate tracker or sidekick.

They probably will be cheaper than new ones, rebuildable and a good lesson in taking care of your hubs.  ;)

Do not be tempted by any automatic locking hubs that you may find!

Hope that this helps!

You should take the rest of the hub off and clean them up either in a parts washer, or with WD40 and a cleaning brush. Pull off the plastic caps and leave them off, they just get stuffed with water/mud. Once the caps are off you'll see the other 6 bolts. When you put in new grease, don't pack them, just use thin coats on the sliding parts. My first one too me about an hour and a half, now I can do both in about 45 minutes. They're really easy after you do one.
