1.8 16v DOHC 96 Sidekick engine core problems
« on: February 28, 2008, 08:16:54 PM »
New to the Suzuki club.  I bought a very nice 96 Suzuki Sidekick with a blown engine.  I was going to rebuild the engine and when I took it apart and took the lower end to the machine shop, basically they told me it was junk and not rebuildable.  For the life of me I can not find a 1.8 core that I can use for rebuilding.  I used car-parts.com which is a locater that a bunch of junk yards are hooked up to and no matter what I call on they have the same issue as mine.  The previous owner ran it out of oil, and the crank walked back and forth damaging the block where the crank bearings lay into.  So I have a good head that is rebuildable with no block crank or connecting rods.  I can purchase a rebuilt engine from autozone for about 2400.  I am trying to do this build for about 1600 so I have some money left over for tires and a few other maintenance issues.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me find a good 1.8 core that is rebuildable with hopefully a good crank and rods that can be reconditioned.  I am looking in the range of 300 or less for the block, crank, and connecting rods.  I live in Michigan so the closer to me the better.  So far every one here appears to be very helpfull and I look forward to some responses.  I work for General Motors at Technical assistance and I will be more than willing to be an active member of this forum.  Giver not just a taker.  Thank you.

You might have to go to a 2.0

Does anyone know about a 2.0 liter conversion?  By the time you find a used engine and possibly an engine wiring harness and computer it may be less money and more reliable to go with the origional 1.8.  Any thoughts?

That sounds about right.  $750 for 150k on 1.8L motor that's almost impossible to find is a good deal.

Good luck trying to find a block only.

I wonder if the 1.8's in the esteem front wheel drives will convert over? I know the 2.0's will from the front wheel drive cars. If so theres a u pull it here that has a couple in esteems. I'm assuming as long as the timing chain isn't broke they might be ok. I can check them out if you'd like. If the motors are good runners they pull them so these would obviously be core blocks.

Good thought but I read somewhere that the bolt holes and mounts are different.  I appreciate your offer to go out of your way to assist me.  I think I am going to be stuck buying a 1.8 rebuilt from the zone.  I found a place here in Michigan that has one in a roled vehicle.  They said that they would sell it to me for 250.  Unfortuantely he will not guarantee anything.  So I could be buying a very large paper weight.  I am going to keep searching and if you have any other thoughts I would appreciate them.  Thanks again.

Well.  I spent the long dollar and bought a 1.8 from the zone.  I looked at Murrays (out west checkers) napa, carquest, bumper to bumper, advanced auto, and a few others.  The cheapest was at the zone.  I have had issues with parts from autozone so I thought about getting the engine from nappa.  I called nappa and they sell ATK engines.  Turns out that everyone sells ATK engines.  So I got it at the zone since they are all the same per the company ATK.  Hope it all turns out well.  Thank you for the help all that replied.  I have heard good and bad things about the 1.8.

You passed up a $250 engine to go with a $2400 engine?

I should have mentioned the local guy with the engine block as a core for 250 has been putting me off for the last month and a half.  Saying that he thinks its good.  He was being a real jerk about it.  I was fed up.  He keeps telling me try me next week and I will try to get it out to check it.  Then when I call he says he is too busy and try back next week.  By the time I buy the block, have it machined, by the rebuild kit, timing chain, and so on I was close to 2400 anyway.  Atleast this way I get a 3 year unlimited mile warranty.
