CB Radio?
« on: February 28, 2008, 10:41:27 AM »
Hey guys, I would like to begin shopping for a CB radio for my 95 4door kick.  Does anyone know of one that would mount easily in the dash maybe where the ash tray goes?  If so, does anyone have pics and/or suggestions?  Thanks

With the CB it really depends on what you are goin to use it for..Wheeling,Trucker talk, weather, find out how many cops are up the road ect.   I use a Cobra, bought it for 100bones at a trucker shop,  its equiped with a weather station and stuff i cant even figure out yet.  I mounted it rite on top of the dash above the climate controls.
I got your Jeep thang,  thats why it burns when I pee..

Mods: BDS 2" susp., Rocky Road +2'' Body, OME struts, flipped strut mount, custom High lift mount, CB, 30x9.50x15 RVT's

Comming soon.... To hell with IFS,  SAS'N it

i have always bought the cheapest cb i could find.
i currently have the bottom line midland. very small and the channel knob is not reliable, so i'm not recommending it (doesn't always change chan. w/every "klick").
most important thing is tuneing the antenna. i have an swr meter from ages ago.
as far as mounting in the dash goes- go for it. how hard could it be?
i have mine between the seats and it's kind of a pia. just too lazy to do anything about it yet.

What kind of range do you get with your CB's?  Is it line of sight like with the FM walkie talkies?

He put the pictures on another site.  pictures 7, and 11-14 show the mounting of the CB in the ashtray.
I started to do the same thing, but my wife thinks she accidentally threw away the ashtray assembly, and I have not gone back to the project for some time.  I guess I need to add that to the list.

cb range is real flukey. it is only reliable pretty close (mile or so?) and some of those little hand held things will do 3-5miles.
cb can "skip" thru the atmosphere and sometimes you can reach across a few states- but how usefull is that?.
real fine for contact on trails.

I was driving to mt Shasta, and had to drive along a river for an hour or so.  Everything around me was rock and vertical, I would hear a lots of talking but see no one, then like 10 min later i would catch up or pass who ever it was that was talking.  I was thinking the it could have possibly been the area that i was at.

I found mounting the "little" CB's that fit in place of my ash tray didn't work out so well. 1st. it has a small speaker to go with the size of it & 2nd. it couldn't be heard due to location. I would recommened if you want a CB expect to pay aprox. $100. (Texas Ranger, Cobra....ect.) Truck stops are a good outlet as they expect more than most people from a CB and there for are typically better units. I live in San Diego & buy on line from Clays Radio it Texas. Also know that the antenna  "in most cases" is more important than the CB you buy for range.( how far you can transmit). My CB is mounted up by the rear view mirror & is eazy to see whats going on as im driving as well as eazy to hear. Most mid priced CB's have a remote speaker jack so if you do need to mount your CB in a poor to hear location the secondary speaker has several feet of cable will help.

the cobra 19 fits great in the ash tray location. I got mine from odd lots for $30. use and external speaker available at radio shack or cheaper at most truck stops. the range with this radio with 21' of cable, and a 4 foot average antenna. Is good for wheeling. i drive truck for a living and I have the $200 Galaxies and the big cobra 29s with all the bells and whistles. you don't need that to get out 2 miles even in the hills

Just picked up the Cobra 18 WX ST II with SoundTracker® and NOAA Weather. Awaiting its arrival. I am excited about the 10 weather station capabilities. Should be easy to mount. We shall see!

Make a mount off the bumper?
My friend did that on his kick, seems to work out pretty good.
or you could go real high class and just slap a magnate whip on top of your track.
