Auto Trans questions
« on: April 15, 2008, 03:25:52 PM »
Hey all, I've searched and read thru pretty much every post on auto trans stuff I could find, and couldn't find anything relating to my question ( except a previous post I made on the same subject.) Here's the deal: My '95 16v 3 speed auto with TCC, will shift at 5700 rpm, WOT, foot to the floor, WITHOUT the Turbo installed. WITH the Turbo installed, it'll pull right to the 6500 redline, WOT, foot to the floor, then shift. I've checked the TV ( kickdown ) cable for proper adjustment, it's fine. No vacuum leaks in the system, tranny fluid is fresh and full. Shifts under both scenerios are crisp and solid, and under low power, smooth and solid. SO, the question is WHY the difference in shift points? How can I get it to run to redline before it shifts while it's nortmally asperated? I'm leaning twards somthing to do with manifold vacume pressure, but I'm no trans guru. Turbo is out of the system, so it's just a lightly modded engine with header, air filter, snorkle, and better injectors. OK, lets hear from the tranny experts. NO pun intended! ;D

Have you given any thought about the added power affecting the shift points? And the torque converter has a lot too add to the set-up also.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that with the turbo the vacuum modulator is taken out of the equation since there is NO vacuum to read under boost. That just leaves the governor to limit rpms. So maybe a different vacuum modulator, or a switched valve to let in atmospheric pressure under full throttle, so it would act like it's on boost.

I don't know much about auto trans other than what I have learned having mine worked on lately. You can get a different vacuum modulator valves for different shift points.  I replaced mine (OK Duane actually did it) on both my auto's and was given two choices at the parts store, difference being how they shifted I was told.  I've had my trans. in the shop and they adjusted the vacuum modulator so maybe they're all adjustable?  I don't know if this helps ya or not.  I've had mine in a "professional" shop twice and they only made things worse.  Gettin' ready to swap in one from the parts Tracker.
