bfg's good for a sidekick?
« on: June 02, 2008, 12:02:46 PM »
ok, my stock tires on my 1990 sidekick are worn down and i want to replace them soon. im looking at the bfg a/t's as a replacement and upsizing (235/75R15) i can get them locally for $163 at costco.

but i also was looking at going full out for bfg M/T's, as costco has them for $167. but its going on a daily driver that will be taken offroad on my days off, but local trails are an hour drive away.

wondering how the m/ts street drive and wear...

what other tires are good on these trucks?

Spend the extra $20 on the MT's. You won't regret it on the trails, and their not that much rougher on the road. Just my 2 cents.

my worry is they will wear down to much from daily driving and highway (my fav offroad place is 8 hours away and another is 12 hours)

The BFGs are pretty good for wear, I have heard of the MTs lasting 60K and unlike a lot of others they are reasonably quiet too.
Yeah, I like my BFG MTs  ;D ;D

I have BFG a/t in the 235/75/15 It seems I have just as much traction with them as my buddies geo with m/t on the hard dirt and rock. I see benefit to mine on highway for sure, but the a/t do not clean them selves at all in the mud. I live in AZ so i hardly worry about mud. it depends if your bogging or crawling. No way that the m/t last 60k with any highway driving. I had 45k on my last a/t before my first flat.

I have 31x10.5 bfg M/Ts on my 90 tracker and love them. quiet on the road, and killer on the trails.

If most of your driving is gonna be on the street I would get the AT's, the MT's wear good but not as good as the AT's + they have a smoother ride.

I have BGF ATs on my daily driver and MTs on my (mostly) trail rig.  The MTs are MUCH louder but both ride very well.  I got both sets used so its hard to say, but I would expect the MTs to wear faster.

Your going to see 30k to 40k from M/T's and up to 50k from A/T's as mileage goes fron "new" tires. Plus A/T's Look gay.

Check the price on the US measure as well.  For some reason a metric size is more expensive.  Costco example BFG A\T 265x70x16   $185
same tire at 31x10.50x16        $138
92 Sidekick 1.6L 16v Calmini\OME 4.5" lift 3" Body Lift OME962 springs in front w\.75" spacers OME955 in rear w\1.75" spacers Extreme Duty Strut Eliminator kit and rear ProComp MX6 Shocks 31X10.50 BFG A\T   Thorley Header   2" exhaust  Calmini front truss bar and stabilizer and skids   Custom Bumpers and Rock Rails  Limit Straps

I've ran with all kinda of rigs on all kinds of trails...

If you're planing on doing a LOT of DEEP mud - go with the M/T. Otherwise, on a DD, the A/T's are going to be quieter, longer lasting, and often BETTER traction. The A/T's have spanked the M/T's on our snow / ice runs, and kept up just fine on rocks & most trails... and RULE in the sand. The M/T's hook up better in mud, but the A/T's keep up just fine in all but the deepest / thickest of mud. The guys I've ran with praise the on-road characteristics of the A/T.

That said, I've heard the MT's have been re-designed to have more siphing which should help them hook up in cold weather trails... but I have not verified that. I went with 29" Pep-Boys Dakota M/T's for about $110 a tire installed with warranty. I've been extremely happy with them. The BFG A/T's out-perform me in snow & ice, but not by too much... and I've never got stuck in Snow / Ice yet... I just slide a bit more when the A/T's remain fully planted.
