Engine noise on '97 Samurai
« on: September 17, 2004, 09:09:39 PM »
I've got a '97 Samurai with around 164 000km's on the clock, that's about 100 000 miles. The engine is making a clattering noise that is so loud, that it almosts sounds like a diesel. I had the 1300cc overhauled, but the problem persists. Also, there is an initial lack of accelleration when you floor it.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean an 87 Samurai ???
The thing that makes an engine sound
like a Diesel is bad loose pistons and
or worn loose Con Rod/Main bearings,
but you say you had the engine rebuilt,
so I would say you need to find out what
they did, and what parts were replaced.

Are the valves all in adjustment ? They
can be clattery if they are out.

Loose cam sprocket could rattle around,
I just rebuilt a 1.3 Sammy and the sprocket
was loose and had a divot in the slot where the
Cam pin engages it, this will change the cam
timing and could cause a loss of power, Also
aside from mechanical problems, check the
timing 10* BTDC is normal, too advanced will
cause pinging, and too retarded will cause a loss
of power and punch you described

Hope this helps, return and report
what you find, Good Luck

Thanks
I will take the info to the garage that did the overhaul, and have them check it out.(I haven't the tools or facilities to do it myself).
The '97 Samurai was released in South Africa, but I don't think in the US. It was around the same time the Vitara came to our country. I'll post a pic shortly.

Ahh, well that explanes it, Consumer
Reports Magazine ruined the Samauri
market in the US with a false EZ rollover
article and TV  report, so we were not
able to buy Sammies after about 89 or 90

Yes, that is a pitty. I have read a lot of that SCAM the Comsumer report mag was running. Incredible how much they had to go through to get the Zuk to eventully roll over. I know Suzuki has filed suite against them, but haven't heard what the outcome was. To think that they couldn't beat the best 4x4 with a better product, so they had to go to these lengths to make it go away!
Sounds a bit corrupt to me, and coming from a guy in Africa, that is nothing to laugh at!
Thanks for all the advise, I'll see what can be done after the weekend.

Mine made a noise like that when the timing belt tensioner backed off... but that can't be your prob, if it made the noise (still) after an overhaul.

I'd try removing the fan belt and see if the noise is still there.

What did they do during the overhaul? Did they check for the obvious... bearings out or piston slap? (A friend had his engine overhauled years ago w/ similar noise. Turns out they put in the wrong sized mains. They didn't mic all the mains... just #2.)

The rattling... does it get worse with different engine loads? When you use a stethascope (or broom handle) can you trace the noise to a given portion of the engine?

Samurais were sold in the US through 1995 wild.

I've had collapsed fuel pumps sound like that. The noise can be decieving. If you've checked everything else, listen to the fuel pump. If you pull it out, the arm should be reasonably firm, and not so it flops half way down before it pumps.
I've even seen defective, brand new pumps do this.

90 was the first year they were offered with fuel injection.  They were imported until 95.  They were dam expensive too!
