newbie here- best lift?
« on: October 28, 2008, 12:13:08 PM »
ok, done some searching, and looking at various posts and ideas.  found a deal on an 86 sammi, and i have a nearly new set of 32" MT's that i will want to put on it.  no hardcore wheeling, just around the farm/timber lease hunting club, where the roughest off-road conditions will be 4wheeler trails that get a bit bumpy.  so, i don't need high dollar lifts for extreme articulation- just something mild to fit these tires.  will stay at the camp, so cuttin fenders a bit isn't a problem- doesn't have to be the prettiest sammi out there.  what's the best/most cost effective way to lift to fit these tires.  also, how hard is the tcase gear swap, that sounds like it would be my best option intially instead of changing r&p- trying to keep the cost low here.

There are quite a few arguments both directions.  The standard SPring Over Axle (SPOA) kit from Sky Manufacturing is a great way to get going.  It gives you the 5" of lift to clear the new tires and the high steering kit.  You should be able to put the 32" tires under it with very little trimming.  If you do a search or two on lift kits you should be able to find good arguments for a SPOA or just staying with a Spring Under kit.

The T-Case is easy to install if you have a good shop.  Trail Tough currently has an installation deal with their 6.4:1 T-Case kits where they will install the gears for free.  I prefer them over replacing the RP, but once again there are arguments both ways.  Some people prefer a mix of the two, going with a 4.8:1 t-case kit and lower gears.
