backspace help - tire/wheel distance protruding o/s fender
« on: April 23, 2009, 08:51:08 AM »
hi,

firstly ive joined the forum and love the info and friendly nature of this board.

anyways, im wanting to buy a set of 15x8 steel rockcrawler rims and cant decide what backspace i need.

This leads to my main problem, is that here in Australia, road rules state that there shall be no tire or wheel that should protrude outside the fender line when the wheel is pointing in a straight direction.

Im going to be using a 30/9.5/15 mud tire.

I figure its between using the 3.75 or 2.75 backspace and I have some flares which extend the fenders out at about 2.2"

Can anyone help and tell me what backspace I should choose?

I believe if you do a standard backspaced 7" wheel, your 30x9.5 tires will tuck under the stock fender flares. No modifications (other than a bit of lift) required. I'd recommend the 7 inch wheel on a 9.5 inch tire to help 'pinch' the tire better which will help you keep the bead. Especially if you air down much. Which on long stretches of gravel roads is just heaven.. :)

Good luck and welcome.

thanks for that, I was really wanting to get the maximum track from changing wheels and taking advantage of my flares (which will extend the fender line around 2.1 - 2.2")

So saying that a standard backspaced wheel that is 7" (3.75" backspace) will go under the standard arch, does that me3an I could go with a 2.75 backspace with my flares? (according to the offset calculator this will extend it out 2")
