where to start
« on: September 23, 2009, 07:24:06 AM »
Hey guys and gals?...I just bought a 86 Sami as you guys say...I don't know why because my nick name should be brand new...I don't have a bunch of money...but I usually can find some...this is going to be mine and my son's hunting buggy (Ranger,Mule,Rhino)....it has the 1.3 engine compression was 155 on all cylinders....but that carb was giving me fits having to unplug stuff to get it to run on all 4...then it would bog bad shifting so ...I bought Weber 38....on it's way...I would like to DD the vehicle especially through Jan...I am very anxious....no patience...but economy has slowed me down...I did buy some Buckshot tires for it...It is in real good shape...it has a header on it...having seats done now...paint booth Sunday...I know I am getting the cart before the horse...but I have friends that do that kind of stuff...where do you start replacing...I mean the breaks seem fine but have a leak in them somewhere....having to add fluid...I would like a good all around lift...I did not buy anything but the 235 tires...29" I think...where do I start...as everything but the carb seemed to be working....but I just don't have the confidence in it as I feel like something could quit any minute with a vehicle this old...any advice would help...I don't want extreme....just good dependable 4x4...any good mods worth the money would be helpful....and if anyone has parts or kits that would benefit me...I would sure consider them....I saw an alternator GM94....I read where a bigger alt....could be beneficial for running lights and so forth...just help a newbie out if you can...Thanks in advance...MH

cool rig. From our experience samurai's are like boats (big hole where you throw money). The nice thing is with minor mods like suspension, tires, lift you can make a hell of a rig for around $2k (assuming motor brakes are in order). The 38 is a great carb to start with. When and IF it comes to motor mod time the weber 38 is the carb that most people go with. Think about your goals for your truck (daily driver, trail rig, rock crawl...ETC). RE-post with exactly what you want to acheive and I'm sure we will be able to point you in the right direction. If all you want is a daily driver, you are probably there. Main things to consider Brakes, tires, running lights, current tags, and a tuned up motor!....oh yeah....DONT FORGET INSURANCE AND MAYBE AAA, IF ITS IN YOUR AREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can also get the My-Side kit from Zuk's Off-Road.  Doesn't look near as fancy though.

Sammypro may be expensive but the kit he sells looks pretty good.  It would be fun to try out one of his high end 1.3 blocks if I ever had a Sammy to try it in.
