Weird intermittent "rumble strip" noise from right side
« on: November 27, 2009, 02:39:34 PM »
Hey guys,

My bone stock '91 Tracker 2 door has started making a weird "rumble strip" noise on the right side of the truck. It doesn't last long, only a few seconds, and it goes away. Then it might return for a few seconds, and then I will not hear it for a while.

It does seem to be more likely to hit when I go over bumps, but it is by no means consistent. I had the shop check it out, and they couldn't repeat it. I had the shocks and struts and right wheel bearing replaced earlier this week (I have heard this "rumbling sound both before and after the bearing was changed), so it shouldn't be any of these parts. They thought the backing was hitting the brake rotor, so they bent that out of the way, but the sound is still there.

Any ideas? I'm not a truck/car guy, so I have no real clue (all my mechanical experience is on motorcycles). I can't figure out why the sound isn't consistent (although it's been happening a bit more often lately).

Worn A-arm bushings?
I think they would of found the top strut bushing when they replaced
that strut if it were bad

But wouldn't that be a constant sort of noise, not just something every 5-10 minutes of driving?

Is this while going straight or while turning?

It will do it while driving straight.

Also, it only seems to do it when I have a passenger or when there is a load of junk in the truck. (I was moving this week).

Make sure your exhaust isn't touching anything when there's weight in the truck, particularly the rear axle or suspension parts.

Exhaust sounds like a good bet.  Also sounds like it only happens under load which proabably means something rubbing.  You might crawl under there and see if you see any new rub/shinny spots.

I'm surprised no one mentioned wheel bearings.
