gonna buy my first trackick but it's a 2wd......
« on: November 05, 2009, 06:03:10 PM »
hello everyone! Looks like i may get to buy my first geo tracker! I've bought some many cars when i could have had a tracker or sidekick because the we're "cooler" and faster(fox body mustangs) but it looks like this time i'm goona get one!!!!! The only thing is the one i found is 2wd and one of the main resons i wanted one was to do some very light weekend trail rides with my wife and 3yr old. Any of you guys taken 2wd offroad? i know i can get a lsd and will but i wanted to get some input from some of you guys before i throw down the cash or start hit'n craigslist of a 4x4. THanks all!

For standard jeep trails in decent weather I don't even bother locking in 4WD. Logging roads and such, you should be fine.  If it gets to raining much I would start thinking about pavement though.

if its light stuff you want to do, then the 2wd one will work. a locker would be a good upgrade.

most of my wheeling is done in 2wd, i only go for 4wd when im getting into harder sections, mud, or steep hill climbs where id use 4low for the lower gearing.

plus you can always grab a 2wd one, build it up little by little then get another one later on thats 4wd and start swapping parts. my trucks starting to rust and its banged up but everything can be removed and plopped on another one.

Trackers are common enough that I wouldn't bother with a 2wd one.  You may find that you like riding the trails enough that you wish you had the 4wd.  I'd only go 2wd if the price was half of what a comparable 4wd would cost.  Trackers come up pretty often and reasonably on the craigslist in Chicago and Chicago is close enough to you that you could take a bus here and drive it home.  Here is a craigslist search I use to find them here.  http://chicago.craigslist.org/search/cta?query=tracker|sidekick|vitara&minAsk=min&maxAsk=max  Substitute your city name to find them locally.  From a quick look they are also common in Louisville.

I've ridden LBL and Turkey Bay.  You will be fine on the main trail, and a great deal of the secondary trails, especially if its dry.  If you venture off the main trail, as long as you have somebody with you to give you a tug if you have trouble, I say go for it!  Make sure you have good tow points front and rear.

In the long run, though, you'll want 4x4.  So unless its a great deal on the 2wd, you might be better off waiting for what you really want.

The tracker i'm looking at seems to be a good deal. it's a 95 auto in real nice shape and alot of motor work done for 1400. there are a few 4x4s but all for around 3000 to 2500. samurais in my area are a little more then that. I'm gonna look some more over the weekend and see what i come up with.

For comparison my 92 auto 4x4 with 144,000 miles but a very clean body was $1500.
