1.6 Conversion
« on: December 31, 2009, 07:42:28 AM »
I am planning to put a 1.6 into my '87 Sami. I have a complete 1992 Tracker LSi that I am getting the motor from. I plan to use everything attached to the 1.6 motor such as the intake and carb, dist, exhaust, alt, starter, etc. Is this possable?  Can I use the Geo motor mounts? I know I will need the tranny adapter, but what else can I get away with. Can I swap the Geo gas tank?  I think it is larger and has a built in elec fuel pump for the EFI throttle body. Will a 1.6 flywheel fit in the Sami bell housing or should I keep the 1.3 flywheel?

My thinking is that since I have a complete Geo to get parts from, it should make my conversion easier.

After I get the motor and stuff needed to install it into my Suzuki, and to make what ever improvements possible, I plan to sell or trade everything else. I also have several Samurai parts available. It is all posted on the classified page.

Hey there... this is an easy swap that has been done so much there is a ton of people that can help you out if you get to any sticking points... If you plan to use the EFI from the Geo, you'll need to get all the harness and modify that to work in your Samurai. Another option is to use the 1.3 intake system as it will bolt directly to the 1.6 8-valve and then all you'd need to add would be an electric low pressure fuel pump to make the whole thing work as stock!

The Geo gas tank will not directly bolt into the Samurai location. BUT when I do swaps here at the shop, I buy a brand new FI Samurai tank and put the Geo pump assembly into that as it is almost a direct bolt in and then the new tank will bolt into the Samurai chassis no problems.

To physically mount this engine, you'll want to get one of the adapter kits that are available from almost every vendor. The kits will have a plate to adapt the engine to the Samurai tranny and you'll use the 1.3 flywheel and clutch. Engine mounts are provided in most kits.

Good luck, Eric

Thanks Eric;

The 1.6 has a throttle body EFI ... not injectors. Isn't the carb on a 1987 1.3 the same? With all the elec on it, I would of thought so. What exactly do I have to change to make the EFI reliable? Are there any diagrams? I would definately perfer the EFI over carberated any day.

Rocky Road offers a lifetime warrentee on their kit. This is my first choice. Petro Works kit does not include the fuel pump. Calamini claims to be the orginal, but only has a 90 day warrentee.

I assume from what you said, the Geo fuel pump will not fit into the stock Sami tank?

Is the 1.6 flywheel too large to fit the 1.3 trannie? Given the choice, I would perfer the larger clutch and preasure plate.

Thanks for all of you input.

Running through your questions:

1. By definition EFI throttle body or no is not the same as carburator. What are you really asking? To use the EFI, you'll need the control wiring and ECM from the donor.

2. The adapter kits are fairly similar and some of the choice boils down to what options you want and who you like to deal with.

3. Yes, Geo pump will not fit in a carb equipped Samurai tank w/o modifications.

4. 1.3 flywheel and clutch is what is needed to fit into the bellhousing of the Samurai tranny. It'll be fine.

I was thinking that the Sami had a throttle body EFI. I know that injectors require completely different wiring. I was hoping it would be an easy change

As engine swaps go it is fairly simple, particulalrly if you use the original carb, intake and exhaust manifolds. The EFI is nice to have though and you can get pre made wiring harnesses to simplify the swap if you're not confident with wiring. If you use the 1.3 parts then its best to open out the intake manifold to match the ports on the 1.6. If you're not running a lift kit then you will need to fit the Sammy oil pan and modify the oil pick up.

The only lift I have is shackles which is good for what I want. What do I have to do to the oil pan and pick up tube?

Where do I get the pre-made wiring?
