Turbo question for you turbo guys.
« on: October 06, 2009, 10:08:22 PM »
I never knew the current Mini's run a turbo now.
wouldn't the Cooper Mini's turbo system be a really great system to use on the trackkicks?  since both motors are 1 liter motors. Mini is 1.8...Zuki is 1.6.  It would seem to me that the Mini's turbo set up would be the easiest to put on to the kick since it's engineered to run on a small displacement motor.

Anyone thought about this?

The top end Minis run a supercharger not a turbocharger, it a variant of the Eaton M45 I believe. The inlet is specific to the Mini and needs some fabrication to adapt to anything else. They can be picked up pretty cheap, new or almost new, in the UK because there is a Sports kit available with an uprated supercharger. I was going to run one on my 8V but I'm wary about the rods on the G16 engine, I'm still considering fitting one to the Baleno engine in the pick up, just too many projects at the moment.
If you take a look on ebay.co.uk there are usually a couple available.

They ( Mini) must have two different variations of blown motors then. My Road and Track, the current issue, says the Top Mini is turbocharged and makes 200hp. That would be a real nice number for a Trackick. The Mini is a front drive vehicle as well, so about the only part that would possibly be useful is the turbo itself ( or supercharger. )   If I was going to start over on mine I would definitely consider a supercharger over a turbo. Boost at idle rpms, and all the way up the tach. My wife's MB Kompressor is only a 4 cyln 1.9ltr and runs down low like a big v6 and revs to the moon.

Looks like they've changed the model line up. There used to be a Mini Cooper that had a supercharger and an optional works kit that included a bigger supercharger. Now they only list a Mini Cooper Works that has a turbocharger, must be time to grab a nearly new supercharger before the supply starts to dry up.

Yeah, no.  The Mini S models switched over to Turbos when the 2nd gen models came out.  I'm talking about the Turbo set-ups from the current Mini's since i'm not really a fan of S/C's.  But i guess even the S/C set up might be an interesting setup for the Track Kicks.

Anyone think this might be a cool idea?

I always think hot rodding anything is a cool idea. But then again, I've never been able to leave anything stock. Now that I'm older and supposedly smarter, I'm begining to see the virtues of completely showroom stock, quiet, efficient, and reliable. And boring? Too bad we can't get a Euro or Asian model of a Zuk with real 4wd that already has a turbo diesel, from the factory. Hey it's your time and $, go for it!

I have one vehicle thats stock, dealer serviced and is a DD, at the moment its my Triumph motorcycle, the rest are toys and I will modify them if I want to.
The TD isn't that great, its doing Suzukis reputation for reliabilty no favours at all - thats what you get when you buy in a French engine.

The old 2ltr TD is a Mazda unit, from the days when Suzuki and Mazda had links, when Ford took a large share in Mazda (Suzuki and GM were tied in) Suzuki went to a detuned Peugeot/Renault 1.9TD  the latest models have the 2ltr TD Renault/Peugeot.

BTW.
I don't have any resources to ever turbo my Zuk...I wish i had a garage and welding equipment.  This was just an idea i was kicking in my head that the Mini motor is 1+ liter just like ours and thought i wonder how easy it would be to mod their setup to ours.
I'm betting all it would take is for a company or someone with good welding skills to make a manifold for our trucks and the rest would be pretty much bolt on.

It was only meant as a conversation piece...looks like it worked.

There is no such thing as "bolt on" turbo parts for our Zuks. I wish, everything on mine had to be fabbed, even the turbo exhaust outlet had to be modified.
