I'm debating getting a newer Tracker/Sidekick/Vitara and debate the merits of the 96+ vs the 99+ versions. I'm talking about 2 door versions. I know the technical differences of the different engines and the rack and pinion vs recirculating ball steering. For average wheeling does the steering difference become an issue? Or is that more an issue if you are turning huge tires? One thing I don't know is the safety differences between the gens. I know they both have airbags but do they both have the side guard beams in the doors? Do the newer ones have a better safety rating? I know both can be lifted about 4 inches with springs and spacer lift. Will the gen 2 have any issues with 31s with a 4 inch lift? I know it's wheel arches are a bit smaller. I've read that parts for the first gen are easier and cheaper to come by. I do like the body style of the gen 2 better. But you do seem to see more gen 1's that people have built. I would think a rust free body would be easier to find in the second gen, but as my 92 shows there are some decent condition 1st gens out there. I think if a second gen could be as reliably built and used for medium duty offroading I'd prefer that gen.
