1.6 engine AND trans swap?
« on: December 30, 2010, 07:59:45 PM »
Hey all, I have read about a lot of 1.6 swaps into samurai's but I am wondering why not swap the trans also? I tried searching for one but I can't find one. Is there a reason for not using a newer trans- strength, gear ratio, size, or something else. I just thought that if you find a donor rig you could just swap both and not have to use a adapter.
Thanks,
Bob

I'm not a Samurai owner, but I understand that the trans tunnel is
a little narrow for a Sidekick trans, but with a body lift and a 2wd
Track/Kick trans, as long as there is enough room for a short drive
shaft (Samurai has a divorced t-case) it could be made to work, not
sure about the shifter placement, might need to cut a new hole

Trail Tough also sells a cut piece of metal you can use to widen your transmission tunnel to fit, but it does involve cutting and welding your existing tunnel..  The 2wd transmission will allow you to use the stock jack shaft from the Samurai transmission since they have the same output splines.

On the plus side, if you so all that you can put a Kicker 3 or Shogun setup in your rig.  :D

Thanks guys, My Samurai is still running OK, but looking down the road if I find a newer 2 wheel drive Tracker with a good engine looks like a cheap swap. Is the jack shaft from the Sami the right length? Cutting a new hole for the shifter and making the tunnel wider wouldn't be a problem. This rig has so many rust holes that a few more wouldn't bother it any.
Thanks
Bob
