Tracker alternator
« on: May 31, 2004, 02:24:32 AM »
So I found out yesterday that my alternators toast. It had been noisy for a while and now its not charging,  dead battery, no one to jump me, had to call wife she just blamed it on all the muddin we've been doing and told me to stop breaking the truck. gonzukin is this weekend and i'm not going to miss it but a new alternator is like $130 :'( not real cheap. will an alternator from a sammi work they look varry similar the connectors are the same the only difference I can see is the pulley. the sammi is a v style and my 95 trackers is flat and grooved both pullys have different bore sizes where they bolt on so you cant just swap pulleys has any one done this before. the sammi doesn't run but its got a brand new alternator otherwise we would bring it.

if the bolts will line up and the pully lines up u can try and just put the zuki pully on...it might need to be machined though

the bore on the trackers pulley is already bigger then the shaft on the sammi alt it would have to be made smaller. also any information on switching to a delco alternator would be apreciated i've got 2 alternators from early 90's S10 blazers that work I'm just not sure on hooking them up wiring wise or the output of them

ok so machining the pully wont work =)

i havea braket infront of me that goes from zuki to "any gm" however the alt guy said this is for a diff gm alt then he thought

it has 2 big "ears" which connect to the zuki side..on the other side it has 1 small "ear" and 2 holes let me know if that is what ur s 10 alts look like

The sammy Alt will work, I have toasted 5 Alts
since I have had my Trucklet, in the first 3
replacements I had to pull the V belt pully
and instal my multi groove pully, my thought
on this is that Kicks never had a V pully so
these must have been Sammy Alts and they
worked fine, just not long  :( (crappy rebuild)

I would love to upgrade the alternator on my Tracker with a high output, low-turn model(higher output at lower rpm's). Are there any adapters out there to accomplish this without spending a ton more than it's worth?
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

How easy is it to wire an GM alt into a Sidekick? Does it require a lot of splicing, and if so, is there a wiring diagram for that out there?

Can't you just rebuild yours? (There ain't much that usually goes wrong in an alternator.)

My In-law's Shelby alternator went out... $385 for a replacement. It turned out it was a diode that popped out. $17 for the diode and brushes at the rebuilder shop, after I pulled the unit.

That pic of the alternator with the orange RTV sealing the oil pan is from an '86 pontiac 6000. That's my bud Wildweasel's rig there. Runs the winch (Ramsey 9000) and OBA with no sweat.
