Can the tailend of the tranny be removed to replace the gear? I can't believe it's plastic, the gear that is. I've never ran into this problem before on any vehicle. I used synthetic gear oil when I replaced the clutch the last time, thought it might help mpg a little bit. That could be the culprit.
If you have a 2wd, then the gear is located in the tail end of the tranny. If you have a 4wd, then it is located in the tail end of the transfer case.
For the tcase, you need to pull the rear half of the tcase off, to get to the speedo gear.
For the tranny, you need to pull the tailshaft housing off and the speedo gear should be right there. Just remove the c-clip to get the gear off.
Synthetic gear oil will not affect the speedo gears. Maybe your speedo cable is "sticking" a little bit inside the cable housing and causing the cable to turn hard and that is what stripped the gear (although generally it just breaks the cable).
Did it strip/damage both gears? I'd guess it probably did.
When you go to replace the gears, you need to make sure you get the same colored ones as your old ones, because there are a few different tooth choices, that varies depending on the color.
The only trackick speedo gears that I have ran across that have been metal, are the ones out of the 89 sidekicks that have a 1.3 engine and a 5 speed manual tranny and 5.62 axle gears. Of course you don't want to use those in yours, because the tooth count is different from yours and your speedo won't read correctly.
